Description Paul van Erk 2008-07-22 16:41:41 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.98)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

Speaks for itself, really. I like to have my widgets aligned nicely without having to squeeze my eyes to see if they line up. :) A grid would be great, with the options to set the horizontal and vertical width. Optional, a snap to grid option but if you want to use the grid, you probably already want a "snap" anyway. :)
Comment 1 Peter Paulsen 2008-07-30 13:31:06 UTC
Please yes, implement it! It's annoying to place a real ruler in front of the display to align the widgets!

In addition to a user configurable grid I also would love to see positioning aids like those lines in gimp which you can drag into the scene from the upper and left side. That would be a goody!

A similar wish is bug #151662 (snap zones on plasma)
Comment 6 FiNeX 2009-09-13 17:45:53 UTC
Do you all agree to set this bug as dup of bug #151662 ?
Comment 7 Paul van Erk 2009-09-14 08:52:42 UTC
Not really. Snapping to screen edges and other plasmoids is different from snapping them 'anywhere'. I'd like to have a grid and set it to, for example, 50px (horizontal and vertical). And it would snap to that, not just other plasmoids or the screen edges.
Comment 8 FiNeX 2009-09-14 09:10:32 UTC
I've simply suggested the merge due to bug 151662, comment 5: it is suggested to add the "snap to grid" feature.

Anyway, let's keep the two wishes separated.

Is there any activity here at all? It seems like one of the most obvious issues with the plasma workspace - I've spent more time than I want to think about trying to line up widgets neatly.

Is the problem that the dev team enjoys a more "organic" layout to their desktops?
Comment 13 Carsten Schlipf 2010-04-27 19:57:00 UTC
Has anybody followed the Widgets concept of the WePad?

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/26/neofonies-wepad-tablet-shown-to-german-journalists-seems-legit/

They have also a grid to align widgets to it - although their grid is way to rough for my taste.
Comment 14 Carsten Schlipf 2010-04-27 20:02:06 UTC
Widget management starts at 09:00 in the first video.
Comment 15 Giulio Camuffo 2010-09-16 16:26:19 UTC
In kdeplasma-addons, under containments/groupingdesktop/griddesktop there's a containment with the same concept there's on the video.
It will be shipped together with 4.6, though not by default.
Comment 16 Carsten Schlipf 2010-09-16 16:40:32 UTC
Hm, the concept presented by the wepad is not really what I want. With 'Grid' I meant more a fine granular width like something you have in a drawing application. E.g. an invisible Grid of maybe 10 pixels to which you can align widgets.

The Grid on the wepad is very coarse. In fact each box is more meant to act like a table cell that can contain content and span cells, if absolutely necessary.
Comment 17 Carsten Schlipf 2010-09-16 16:49:30 UTC
Well... haven't seen the griddesktop yet. In case it's possible to span multiple cells and there's an option to set the grid size to low values, like 10 pixels I think it's OK to close this report - although I would like to rather replace the standard plasma container with this container instead of having to install and configure it separately.

But in case the Grid is coarse like in the WePad Video, I won't consider this wish as resolved.
Comment 18 Giulio Camuffo 2010-09-16 16:55:59 UTC
With Grid Desktop you can set as many rows and columns as you like, so you decide how much big are the cells. and the widgets can occupy as many cells as you want.
Comment 19 Carsten Schlipf 2010-09-16 17:06:47 UTC
Sounds great! This also means that the grid is dependent on the current screen resolution, right? This could be even better than a static grid.

Is there also the possibility to configure a padding between the cells?
Comment 20 Giulio Camuffo 2010-09-16 17:17:07 UTC
yes, the containment knows the number of the cells, not their size, so their size is dependent to the containment's size.

with padding you mean spacing? currently it's not possible, anyway i don't know why you ask that. If you use tiny cells you can keep a line of cells between your items.
Comment 21 Carsten Schlipf 2010-09-16 17:27:09 UTC
Yes, that would be a workaround. However in that case the spacing between plasmoids will be dependent on the current screen resolution. That's why I believe that a constant, fixed spacing between plasmoids would be nicer.

Anyway - I realize that I am starting to nitpick here.

In fact you can also see a fixed spacing between different objects in different cells also on the wetab.
Comment 22 Giulio Camuffo 2010-09-16 18:30:43 UTC
actually your argument makes sense. i could add an option for that in the future.
Comment 23 Janet 2010-11-07 14:21:07 UTC
And nobody likes the idea of having gimp like help lines to align the widgets as proposed in Comment #1? I'd love to see that too. Maybe that should go to a separate wishlist entry?
Comment 24 Todd 2010-11-07 17:39:04 UTC
There is a separate bug about that already: 151662
