Description Daniel Calviño Sánchez 2008-07-19 20:44:44 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.83)
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs

In KDE 3.5, "Switch user" menu entry was a nested menu that showed "Lock Current & Start New Session", "Start New Session", a separator and then all the sessions currently started (being them graphical or in a tty).

However, in KDE 4, the "Switch user" entry in the traditional menu is just an action item that behaves like "Lock Current & Start New Session" did in KDE 3.5 (that is, it shows an information dialog to start a new session or cancel the action).

I'd like "Switch user" in the traditional menu to behave like it did in KDE 3.5. It is very useful for shared computers in a family environment where some users aren't very experienced, so they can switch to their already open session with ease, or start a new session without locking the current one.

I think that it is not a duplicate of bug 166985. As far as I understand the report of bug 166985, that bug is a duplicate of bug 152805.

Bug 152805 states that:
When I select Leave->"Switch User" from the K-menu, The window to run a command ( as with alt-f2) appears

Bug 166985 states that:
[In previous KDE versions] When I needed to login to another session I used 'Switch User' and after that I could switch between the open sessions by pressing ctrl-alt-f7 or ctrl-alt-f8 and so on...
[Now] I do not get a login menu when selecting 'Leave' and then 'Switch User' in the KDE menu. Instead I get a run dialog with the title 'Switch User' but no other suggestion as how to select another session or user.

Note that the reporter of bug 166985 says that "I get a run dialog", so it sounds like "the window to run a command" of bug 152805.

Moreover, in bug 166985 the reporter seems more interested just in being able to start a new session, and not in switching between already open sessions using the menu (as the report says, refering to previous KDE versions, "I could switch between the open sessions by pressing ctrl-alt-f7 or ctrl-alt-f8 and so on"), which is what is really missed right now and the focus of my report.

it isn't an exact duplicate in terms of description; but it is in terms of solution.

I have seen that bug 166985, which this bug was marked as a duplicate of it, has been marked as fixed.

However, I have just checked KDE 4.1 in Mandriva 2009 Beta 2 and, although that bug seems indeed fixed, this bug (167024) isn't fixed yet (although I don't know whether it is fixed in trunk or not).

So, what should I do now? Reopen this bug? Reopen the other bug? Anything else? Thanks.
