Description Dotan Cohen 2008-06-30 11:05:18 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.83)

I have two Kubuntu installations, one running KDE 3.5.9 with a UTF-8 locale, and the second running KDE 4.1 Beta 2 with a UTF-8 locale. On the 3.x machine I copied several files with Hebrew filenames to a VFAT USB pen drive using Konqueror. When connecting the USB pan drive to the KDE 4.1 Beta 2 installation, however, both Dolphin and Konqueror show question marks instead of Hebrew characters in the filenames.

Other computers that I tested the pen drive on (one KDE 3.5.9 machine with UTF-8 locale and one Windows XP Professional SP2 machine), with the same files, show the Hebrew filenames with no problem. Note that I can give files Hebrew filenames on the KDE 4.1 Beta 2 machine, the only problem is reading files with Hebrew filenames from USB pen drives. I have not had the opportunity to test from CD or from SSH.

Bug 167547 has a similar situation for filenames over SSH. However, instead of question marks, the user sees gibberish. Therefore I do not believe that the bugs are related.

fixed for kde 4.1.2 and 4.2

(it seems that automatic bug closing still haven't been restored)

Well, the problem seemed to be fixed in 4.1.2, but CD's or DVD's still mounts with wrong encoding. I see only "?????" in filenames instead cyrillyc characters!
Comment 5 Nick Shaforostoff 2008-10-12 21:17:02 UTC
wait for 4.1.3 ;)

Someone can confirm it is working on KDE 4.2 beta2 (or trunk) ?
Comment 10 Dotan Cohen 2008-12-27 00:39:01 UTC
I can confirm that the issue is fixed in Trunk. Thanks.
