Description Murtaza 2008-03-07 16:54:30 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.2)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

I use F-<n> keys to switch to desktop <n> on KDE. However, KDE 4 does not let me assign F1 and F3 to switch desktops since the shortcut is already bound to opening help and "Find Next". Is there a way to reassign it? I could do it in KDE 3.5.X ....

As of revision 816464, F-<n> keys can again be assigned as shortcuts (at least in Yakuake).

However, I still cannot assign the Menu key as a shortcut as I used to do in KDE3.
Comment 3 Neil Levine 2008-06-08 16:05:11 UTC
Rafael, the issue is defining the binding for kwin i.e. globally via the KDE settings. Yakuake does seem to let you define F3, say, for its invocation but this seems to be handled by the application itself.
Comment 4 Raphael Kubo da Costa 2008-06-08 17:25:04 UTC
I see, and it is indeed a kwin problem apparently. I can assign the F-n keys in Yakuake as well as in kwin and all other programs, but I still can't use the Menu key as a shortcut anywhere.

This has been fixed a while ago. You will be informed about a clash with standard shortcuts but you can choose to use a shortcut anyway.
Re comment #4 from Raphael Kubo da Costa: This is a different matter, please open a new bug if you still care. I don't know if that one is easily fixable. Sorry for splitting hairs here :)

Andreas,

Then please reopen this bug I openned for the menu key that was marked as a duplicated of this bug:

Andreas,

In which version do you believe this to be fixed? I am running 4.0.5 and:

1. Attempting to redefine F3 brings up the dialogue: "The F3 key combination has already been allocated to the standard action 'FindNext' that many applications use. You cannot use it for global actions for this reason."

2. Attempting to redefine Switch to Desktop 1 with the custom entry of F1 causes the Help application to start but does not redefine the key for this action. I cannot see any way of disabling the Help Application invocation via this key?

Neil

Hi Neil,

both bugs have been fixed in SVN trunk which will become KDE 4.1.x. If you can reproduce any bug in a recent 4.1 beta feel free to reopen.
[Generally speaking, bugs are getting fixed rapidly in SVN while new bugs are being added at a slower rate. Therefore SVN versions are the best versions most of the time until everything has stabilized a lot more.]

Andreas,

Just upgraded to 4.1beta and the bug has indeed disappeared. Thanks for your help.
