Description Rune Jensen 2008-02-03 20:57:42 UTC
Version: (using KDE 3.5.8)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

It would have been nice if KMplayer supported KIO slaves and URLS like fish://rune@tvbox/movie.avi and smb:// urls for samba shares

Regards
Rune Jensen

Some kio protocols, like media:, resolve to local files and do work. Network protocols require a kio stream feed to the player. I don't think this worth the trouble because they are so rare. You may consider to mount a smb share to a local directory instead.
An alternative is to download the file first, which might be easier but not always wanted.

I feel that in kde4, using the phonon backend, the issue should be solved by phonon. Phonon uses QUrl, so no kio slaves, but their will be a Q counterpart of kio as I understands.

"You may consider to mount a smb share to a local directory instead. "

i have been told how this is the solution to this, but it really is not a good solution - first, my housemates that share my media PC and laptop at times are used to windows where they can click a movie or mp3 that is shared and just watch it. when i tell them they have to copy it first or "mount" the directory they get scared of linux...

for myself, when i mount the directory i can then stream, but if i loose internet the mount screws up badly and all hell breaks out. basically, mounting is _not_ a good solution to this, IMO.

i would _love_ to be able to browse networks, like smb and sftp, and seamlessly click files and choose to either download or play them. then my housemates wouldn't be complaining about my linux media PC either, since it would have windows parity in user friendlyness...
