Description Richard Hartmann 2008-01-10 10:08:46 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.8)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

As you probably know, EU law (that is being tested in EU and country-specific courts, at the moment) mandates the full surveillance of all users' connections and connection meta-data, be they online, mobile, land-line or anything else. This will lead to an increase of usage of services like TOR.

A major problem of TOR and, to the best of my knowledge, all similar services is that, by design, an exit node must see all traffic going through it, opening non-SSL/TLS traffic for the inspection of whoever might be running said exit node for whatever reasons.

This means that while a general and consistent move to services like TOR is desirable, a few select connections _must not_ be made via those services.

Furthermore, there are more and more country-specific services which users from other countries might want to access. Examples would include pandora.com or BBC's iplayer.

My request is to introduce dynamic, tab-specific control over when and what proxies to use. Being able to define proxy settings on tab level means that one would be able to directly and interactively choose what is the least evil for a specific site or situation. Coloring part of the status bar with self-defined colors or other visual hints to show what proxy settings are being used for a specific tab would greatly help users avoid confusing and accidental usage of a/no/the wrong proxy.

In light of the extremely serious problems that are rising both in the 'free' world and in suppressive regimes, I would consider this a high priority item, but then I would not report it if I did not care about it in the first place. Please show your support by voting for this item.

The last version I was able to test was KDE4 Beta 2, but I am assume that this issue is open for 4.0.0 as well and will test asap.
