Description Roger Oberholtzer 2007-02-12 20:30:09 UTC
Version: 1.9.6 (using KDE KDE 3.5.6)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

I am running kmail on OpenSuse 10.0 and 10.2, using the latest KDE 3.5.6 build. The problem I am having has been around in previous releases as well. I have checked the reported kmail bugs that claim this has been fixed, but I do no think this is the case.

kmail connects to an imap server (courier-imap-4.0.4-3.2) to access mail.

The issue I have with kmail is that it seems to get the wrong idea of when there is a new message in a folder. Quite often it will say there are 50 new messages when there are none. When I click on the folder, it figures that
there were none. But until I click on the folder, the wrong idea about new messages remains. There is no other process (other than procmail) accessing the maildir folder. kmail is the only client to this imap server.

I have reported this on the SUSE lists and others have said they have the same problem, even with other IMAP servers like Cyrus.

If I use evolution (sorry...) in the exact same setup it never gets this wrong. So I cannot believe the imap server is the cause. Unless evolution silently deals with this.

I have a similar problem using the save version of Kmail with Cyrus imapd.
(Installed from suse rpms for opensuse 10.1 and 10.2. Server is also suse 10.2.
I'm using ssl, and have an 8 minute mail checking interval, yet leaving kmail sit for hours will usually show the wrong numbers of new mails in each folder, or no mails at all. This means I have the check each folder where sieve scripts might have deposited mail.

I've subscribed to these folder, so kmail should keep them current.

There seem to be a lot of problems with the count of new/unread messages and IMAP:
bug #141606 (this one)
bug #136070
bug #133871
bug #131917
bug #120914
bug #120487
bug #104190
bug #102165
bug #92272
bug #83893

The reports all seem slightly different, so I don't know if there are any duplicates.

I'm having this problem too as long as I can remember. I guess this problem is forgotten about, and is therefore postponed :|
In every update of kmail I hope it got fixed but it has been idle hope the last few years :/

My full problem description:
The number indicating the amount of unread/new mails in imap folders keep showing up wrong. As soon as I open an imap folder the amount changes to the right amount. After I change to another imap folder and leave kmail idle for some time, the amount changes back to a wrong value.
I'm using kmail 1.9.9, which is included in ubuntu hardy. The imap server is running courier 3.0.8..

I had forgotten about this. My own personal solution is to use evolution instead of kmail. I have not checked back to see if kmail is corrected for this. I think the problem is that the developers have convinced themselves that kmail is following the book, and the problem is that the imap server is doing the wrong thing. Odd that every other e-mail client I use gets this right. Only kmail reports incorrect information...

Never encountered this problem since KDE 4.2+. Anyone else or is this fixed?
