Description Mark Taylor 2006-11-25 04:16:52 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.4)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

If a second panel is added, for example at the top of the screen, right-clicking on that panel and selecting "configure panel" brings up the configuration dialog for the original panel. There does not seem to be any way to access a configuration dialog for the second panel. This means that for the second panel you're stuck with the default settings for size, length, hiding etc.

Specific use case: I want to add a second panel at the top or side of the screen, containing a selection of launchers I don't have space for in my main panel. However, I would like this panel to autohide so it isn't taking away from the space available to maximised windows on the desktop. At the moment this is not possible because I cannot access the required setting. This is possible in both Gnome and Xcfe, but not currently in KDE 3.5.4. due to this bug.

Expected behaviour: Right-clicking on a panel and selecting "configure panel" should bring up a configuration dialog for the selected panel, not the main panel.

This may be a new bug as judging from various forum posts I have read configuring multiple panels worked with previous KDE versions, although some settings could not be altered independently.

KDE version was entered as 3.5.4 (as packaged with not Kubuntu 6.10), not sure why it comes up as unspecified here.

It still works. I tested with 3.5.5 doing "Add new Panel -> Panel".
Right-click on the Panel brings up the dialog.
In this dialog there is at the top a combobox "Settings for:" in which you can select which of all your panels you want to change things.

The Suse updates are right now by 3.5.5 "release 45"
and I have the problem.
Comment 4 Yuriy Kozlov 2007-02-23 10:31:33 UTC
That combo box has been gone for several versions already, at least in Kubuntu packages. It's quite frustrating not having it.
Comment 5 Miguel De Anda 2007-03-21 10:59:13 UTC
I was able to reproduce this on kde 3.5.6. I was walking somebody through the steps of adding a panel and they complained that it was changing the size for the wrong panel.

Anyway, I tried it myself. I added a panel by right clicking on my main (only) panel. Then I dragged it up to the top. Then I right clicked on the new empty panel and selected configure panel. There was no drop down to change which panel I was setting settings for, and it was changing settings for the main panel. Notice the "position" widget in the attachment that follows.

no drop down, and its changing settings on wrong panel

I can confirm this bug for Debian 4.0 x86 on KDE 3.5.5, when I click configure panel, it defaults to main panel (though I can change this) neither the main panel nor the proper selection panel does anything.

I can change the settings of the main panel from it's own right click menu.

When I drag the original panel to the top of the screen, the configuration dialog still lists it as being on the bottom panel.
Comment 8 Maciej Pilichowski 2007-09-23 22:18:14 UTC
In KDE 3.5.7 in opensuse 10.2 it works correctly, but in KDE 3.5.7 (newer revision) in opensuse 10.3 it works incorrectly.

Why this bug report is closed -- it is obvious this bug goes and comes back, anyway it still bites.
