Description Chris Vigelius 2006-10-02 17:46:15 UTC
Version: 1.9.4 (using KDE KDE 3.5.4)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

This is now the second time KMail killed all the mail in my inbox in about 5 weeks - can you guess how p*ssed I am right now?

Anyway, here's the problem description:

I access my GMX account through IMAP with KMail using the disconnected IMAP feature, since I have a desktop machine and a notebook. I've made some folders next to (not below) my inbox for several mailing lists, and the first unusual thing I've noticed is that sometimes I get error messages about KMail not being able to create some of these folders, although these folders exist on the server for some years now (I'm not sure whether this relates to the bug, but I think I'd mention it just to be sure). I click "continue" on these popups, and am able to access everything as usual.

But, as mentioned before, today it happened the second time that I found my Inbox completely emtpy after returning to my PC. Common factors in both situations were:

- KMail was left open on at least one of my machines for an hour or two (using cachedimap)
- On another machine, the same IMAP account was opened, too (at the first occasion it was Thunderbird/WinXP, today it was KMail/Suse 10.1)

Doing the same thing with e.g. two instances of Thunderbird did not cause any problem for years, so it is definitely not a GMX problem - mail loss only occurs if KMail/cachedimap comes into play. This has also (very probably) nothing to do with network outages, since I checked my router log and the connection was up all the time (both machines are on cable). Therefore I am not sure whether this is related to bug #104956, and it is definitely not the same as #122836, since I don't have any crippled mails, just an empty inbox.

/var/log/messages does not contain anything suspicious. If there are other logs which may contain useful info, please let me know.

Unfortunately at first, I've search for this problem and I didn't find any report, and then I've created bug 140819.
Nevetheless, It's clear that this is a major bug in kmail, hopefully somebody will fix it soon.

Would be great to know whether this is still a problem with recent kmail versions

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
