Description Marijn Schouten 2006-08-15 22:03:30 UTC
Version: 1.6 (using KDE KDE 3.5.4)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc-4.1.1
OS: Linux

I'm trying to get kscd to play an audio cd using direct digital playback. I have set the soundsystem to alsa. (Arts is disabled.) I get a popup about no permission or no disk, but that message appears to be bogus. Konsole output:

QWidget::setProperty( "text", value ) failed: property invalid, read-only or does not exist
kscd: Asking mediamanager for hda
kscd: Reply from mediamanager /dev/hda

I can use xmms (with cdaudio plugin) and totem /dev/hda to play an audio cd fine.
Comment 1 Carsten Lohrke 2006-08-16 02:09:24 UTC
Marijen, this is not a problem with KDE, but Alsa can't find the device for some reason. Misconfigured udev, I suppose.
Comment 2 Marijn Schouten 2006-08-16 10:08:42 UTC
then why do xmms and totem not have the same problem?
Comment 3 Carsten Lohrke 2006-08-16 18:21:41 UTC
Probably they use a different (legacy) device name, that exists on your box, but is usually symlinked today. At least on my (Gentoo) box there is /dev/audio -> sound/audio.
Comment 4 Marijn Schouten 2006-08-17 17:32:31 UTC
I've tried all devices which look like they have anything to do with sound and it makes no difference for kscd. I've never had to tell totem or xmms which device to use.
Comment 5 michael.tomuschat 2006-10-19 19:41:13 UTC
I have the same problem under SuSE 10.1
Comment 6 Marijn Schouten 2006-10-19 19:53:52 UTC
I want to add that the ``cdrom'' is really a dvd-writer and doesn't even have an audio-out, so it is definately not hooked up directly to the onboard sound. My sound works fine. Amarok works fine. mplayer works fine. sauerbraten works fine. I mean the sound of these all works fine. So my alsa is fine.

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Oct 19 10:04 /dev/cdrom -> sr0
brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Oct 19 10:04 /dev/sr0

I am in the cdrom group, so I don't understand why I get an error that maybe there is no audio cd in the tray or maybe it can't read. Both are untrue.
Comment 7 michael.tomuschat 2006-11-08 17:51:37 UTC
I just downloaded the last version of KDE (3.5.5, "release 39.1"). Still the same problem. Carsten, can you give some workarounds to tweak alsa, so that kscd can use it (if alsa is the problem)?
