It's very time-consuming to go through each filetype and change the assocation, particularly given that removing one for any reason and reinstalling seems to "randomly" change the order they appear in by default. I've wasted lots of time e.g. going into multiple places to increase the priority of amarok, or kaffeine, for various media; and basically I'd like to be able to say "always use kaffeine to embed if it handles the filetype" (or Dragon, or whatever phonon frontend is relevant in kde4). It would be extra, extra nice if it were easier to then click through to a list of media types that program supports and pick out a few, then click a button that says "first priority for the selected types". That would be a bonus feature for 4.2, maybe :o) Oops. Comment mostly meant for #88534. I like the current layout for file type associations; what's missing is the ability to quickly deal with multiple associations on a per-application basis (clicking "Edit" after selecting an app in the list shows me the associations, and will even let me add or remove them, but I can't see any way to directly go from there to changing the priorities?). The tab in the properties dialog has been removed in kde4. KDE 5 is almost ready, yet easy of use is not an option. You've put file associations and default programs under the same sub menu yet still didn't make an option described here. Will this ever be implemented? I wanted to associate my little program to three filetypes. The first was peace of cake, just hit "add" and it will automatically create a appname.desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications/, but on the second mime-type, it created a second appname-2.desktop file for the same application. That was not, what I had hoped for. So I tried it the other way round: Edit the first application and add more mime-types to it. But since there are a thousand in the tree under application/ and the tree is not sorted at all, finding my desired type is really a pain in the ass, forcing me to read the whole list very carefully. This tree should be sorted and there should be the same search feature in the small dialog as in the main kcontrol-app. I hope this feature will be implemented some day. Actual file association kcm has very bad usability. |
