I have been looking into this the last few days. Instead of just showing tabs in order, Kate shows the last X edited documents. This means that, when opening a document the least recently document is hidden and this document may be in any tab index. Adding tabs to the right looks OK until we run out of tabs. What should be the behavior in this case? Adding to the left or to the right? If we move the overflow menu on the left, then I don't see why we couldn't add tabs to the right forever and have the left-most ones fall off into the overflow menu. Just place them here and all. Now Kate support manual tabs ordering, so when/if we need to change this order we'll do it manually. Or at least give us the ability to switch order behavior.
