First at all, use "akonadictl stop" wait that it was stopped (verify it with akonadictl status" and after that "akonadictl start" so it's not necessary to reboot machine. Restarting akonadi does work, but it doesn't actually prevent the problem from arising. I don't face this issue with Thunderbird (for example). Thank you for reporting this issue in KDE software.
