Yes, I would really love to have some emblem implementation EXACTLY like in
Nautilus. It is implemented extremely well in Natilus and full of features,
including great drag and drop support.

If someoene want to know waht I mean, check out the latest Nautilus in GNOME 2.3.x

Krusader seems to have some kind of tagging ability already. How about merging 
this feature with Konqueror so it gets used by both programs?

Instead of emblems (which can get crowded), I'd rather have a Panther-like labeling feature that changes the color of the text bg.

While that is a first step towards great emblem support such as GNOME 2.4 (emblems are fantastic there, best implementation I've ever seen) it is not as versatile or intuitive. It is much easier seeing a boom box next to a folder and knowing its music than seeing the background color of the text as green.

BTW: IS the feature still the same in OS X 1.3, just released a few days ago? I thought they improved on that.

Also, I think emblem support in GNOME 2.6 is signficantly ebtter than Panther's. Panther's coloring won't easily tell you what it's alla bout, unless you will only associate 3-4 emblems it will become difficult to remember what each color stands for. I prefer GNOME"s method, but background highlighting on the text would also be nice.

I'd favor for this, too.

However, I'd even more like this when it's being implemented via filesystem's extended attributes (xattr) that could be shared between the desktops and fm's (gnome-vfs, mc, bash, ...)

KDE 4 support file tagging and commenting. Actually you can tag using text labels, not using colors or emblems.
I don't know if it is planned (and if it really needed) to implement tagging with emblems and/or colors.

Anyway an interesting idea could be to associate an icon to each tags and display it near the file (like nautilus).

you can assign icons to tags. you could also assign colors to tags. Nepomuk allows to assign pretty much everything to everything else. That is the basic idea. All it would take is another property. We could without any problem create a KDE ontology that defines stuff like color for tags (although IMHO color is the wrong approach, better use the virtual folders to list stuff that is urgent and so on).
Back to the icons: the information is there. We only need to exploit it. The new tag dialog allows to set an icon and Nepomuk::Tag::symbol gets you exactly that back.

Hmm, so at the moment one can (if I'm not mistaken) :

[Under Dolphin/KDE]
- assign tags to files / folders
- search tags / use virtual folders
- select coloured alternatives of folders icons (one by one)

Apps can set emblems (i.e. NextCloud)

[Other file managers]
(i.e. Nemo) enable to do some of those actions more easily :
- right-click / multi-select to set coloured icons
- setting emblems (several clicks away / one by one though)

[On the Mac] 
it seems you can choose coloured LABELS


I think the current situation on KDE is quite advanced, but probably not suited to the average user. 
1) Coloured icons are not easily discoverable and need several clicks.
2) And you can not choose coloured icons for *files*
2b) this would be worked-around by implementing coloured *labels*
3) Emblems cannot be set through Dolphin
4) a "regular" user will never make proper / efficient use of tags & virtual folders. This is useful and powerful but too long / complicated.

The average user should be able to set colours (or common emblems ?) in 2 clicks and apply those to both folders & regulars files (if needed, several at a time). I saw a teacher using those on a Mac to very quickly identify which homework he had corrected or not or partly. Results appear instantly and setting coloured labels is very fast.

Well, that's yet another spoiled user suggestion :-)

I would like to chime in and add that - at least to me - emblembs would be a highly appreciated feature. While tags are useful, as Mahendra stated, emblems would add a quick visual indication which files the user has (currently) deemed important/in need of work/etc. 

File managers like Nemo or Caja have had this feature for years. The following link provides some (slightly outdated) screenshots of what it looks like in Linux Mint's implementation: https://segfault.linuxmint.com/2014/08/emblems-in-nemo/

I've also attached a (really quick and dirty) mock-up of what it could look like in Dolphin. The emblems are already available in the Breeze icon set.
