Description Denis Kuplyakov 2011-03-14 08:29:22 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.6.0)
OS: Linux

When I am copying files, notification indicates the process, and shows a name of current file which is copying. When files are small in size, but their names with path have very different length, popup resizes very often to big or to small. I think popup shouldn't resize to fit path, and should to be one size all the time.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Copy directory with many small files with long and short names, and click on notification for popup.

Actual Results:
See details.

Expected Results:
Notification popups shouldn't resize so often.

OpenSUSE 11.4

I also recorded 2 clips of the notification window in kde 4.6.2 showing this kind of problem, one with a SINGLE large file and another one with a lot of small files:

In General Plasma suffers from lags concerning to resizing of widgets. The same goes for Networkmanager Plasmoid, fortunately, most of the resizings could be suppressed. But still, if you resize or move extenders (the popup windows Plasmoids in the panel can emit), it gets really laggy. Even the transition from free floating (rounded borders) to attached (no border at one side) takes a second to apply.
The notifications and progresses in 4.6 are polished and occupying less space but in concerns of bugs and lags it is worse than 4.5. You cannot even resize the notifications anymore…

The notification “polish” that was done for 4.6 did make more things wose than better.
You cannot even resize notifications anymore and on my 1920x1080 screen they are like 200 pixels wide with NO way of changing that.

When you try to minimize the window notification, it folds properly (it is smaller than it should be) and disappears button enables him to return to its original size. See screenshot.

minimize the window notification
Comment 16 lman 2011-10-03 08:02:26 UTC
Current resize policy for this window is really annoying.
I think that best would be to define some maxWidth. Then while the operation is in progress the window should be able only to increase its width if it is needed, but not more than maxWidth. If the width of next element to copy/move/delete is smaller the current width it should remain unchanged.

Confirmed for 4.8.80.

The jumpiness bug happens also when you have two groups of notifications in the popup and one of them has already finished. Closing the finished group while the other one is still running also triggers the issue.

Similar issues have also been reported in Bug 284395 (besides some other notification popup bugs).

Currently I'm not able to reproduce the wiggling popups in 4.9.0. Is this somehow fixed? There are still lots of other issues, but at least the jumping dialog is something I can't reproduce anymore at the moment.
Comment 22 Janek Bevendorff 2012-08-05 15:52:15 UTC
Actually, when I have a file operation running and add another one while having the notifications popup expanded, the width changes slightly, but then stays constant again.
So not completely fixed, but nearly (or is someone else still experiencing severely wiggling popups?).
Comment 23 Kai Uwe Broulik 2012-08-05 16:15:06 UTC
I actually did yesterday.

fixed in 4.10, complete rewrite
