What I was doing when the application crashed:
I tried it several times after and it worked fine then. Maybe it was some issue that kbuildsycoca had to be run/updated for my root user first?

Looks like an installation issue. Does this happen only with the KDM module ?

Milian, your assumption may be right. You could try (re)moving all of /root/.kde, /var/tmp/kdecache-root, and /tmp/kde-root to reproduce the crash, so the problem may be related to bug 195726.

Now running with 4.3.0 and doing what you suggested I could not reproduce the crash.
