Description Mathieu Jobin 2004-11-12 18:15:11 UTC
Version: 0.9.1 (using KDE 3.3.1, Gentoo)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.4 20040623 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.4-r1, ssp-3.3.2-2, pie-8.7.6)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.9

Apple seems to supply source code to make your computer RendezVous compliant, or something.

I don't know if kopete could support that, send your identity to the rendezvous LAN and allow the client part to receive/sent message

that'd be great.

Two possibilities of IM Protocol for LAN chatting via Bonjour/Rendezvous

-Jabber if client-to-client conversion is possible(i.e requiring no server)

-Developping a all-new specific Kopete LAN chatting protocol but it's a bad idea IMHO, require a lot of design and it's duplication.

Both solutions require additional Windows and Mac OS X client to support it to a extend (not everyone is using UNIX desktop, and even less with KDE compiled with dnssd support)

I think we should wait for Tiger. They announced further support for zeroconf (we should refer to it now by this name) and complete integration of Jabber into iChat. So, solution No.1 of the previous poster sounds all the more interesting.
Again, I think we should look at Tiger and see how we can improve upon that.
Comment 8 Mathieu Jobin 2005-08-09 21:44:17 UTC
Tiger is released... for more than a month now.

iChat does not have that many changes, well, RendezVous has been renamed to Bonjour. everything else is not really related to this bug.

any solutions that require work on Windows and OS-X clients makes no sens.

first step is to be able to see OS-X computers with iChat and Bonjour enabled.
broadcast our presence and being able to chat.

I'm not to worried about Windows, somebody will a client for it.

You should be able to "see" the MacOS X computers by using dnssd:/
Comment 10 Jakub Stachowski 2005-08-10 11:40:44 UTC
1) it is zeroconf:/ since kde 3.4 beta
2) you will see MacOSX machines only if they export some services usable for KDE (for example web server, ftp server, ssh server, etc.)

You can have more information on the protocol used by ichat on this web page :
http://xurble.org/weblog/2005/08/bonjour-ichats-use-of-xmpp-jabber.html

or by looking the gaim plugin source , on http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/gaim/gaim/src/protocols/bonjour/
Comment 12 Ivo 2006-04-02 00:51:43 UTC
There's a limited functionality kopete plugin available: http://zmdns.sourceforge.net/rendezvous/index.html
Comment 13 Michaël Larouche 2006-04-02 03:35:50 UTC
That Kopete plugin is dated from 2003. Sure it doesn't compile with recent Kopete (0.11 and 0.12)
Comment 14 Mathieu Jobin 2006-08-09 02:43:59 UTC
any plan to have that include in KDE4 or something?
Comment 15 Michael Scherer 2007-08-18 11:03:19 UTC
Since telepathy support is planned ( http://www.tehbisnatch.org/2006/11/11/its-like-telepathy/ ), maybe someone could try to use telepathy-salut with it ?
Comment 16 Will Stephenson 2007-11-14 14:59:11 UTC
Would still be nice...
Comment 17 Matt Rogers 2008-07-07 06:44:57 UTC
there is a bonjour plugin now in extragear for KDE 4.1. It will move to kdenetwork for KDE 4.2
