Description jakubpol 2004-10-05 16:38:49 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc-3.4.1-r2
OS: Linux

I have a problem with the 'Access keys' feature. To tell the truth, I do not quite know what it is supposed to do, but that isn't a problem. The problem is I must have somehow turned it on and I have no idea how to get rid of it. It is incredibly annoying because I can't normally navigate the web page any more as the 'Access keys' message appears on the status bar after a second.

My personal opinion is that it's a feature for the very advanced users and it souldn't be easy to switch it on by accident (it shouldn't be activated by a shortcut, at least not by default, maybe an option somewhere would be better?).

Anyway, I'll be vary grateful if someone tells me how to switch that damn thing off.

Press Ctrl. (AccessKeys is for shortcuts on webpages -- see LinuxToday news stories, for example. Or on this page, pressing ctrl, then c will move you to the comments field.)

Thank you very much for your answer. If I press Ctrl, then I get "Access keys activated" text on the statusbar. And it would seem that Ctrl also turns it off.

But there is something else bizarre going on. It somehow seems to activate itself after a second or so. When I press pageDown for exapmle, it gets deactivated and I can use my keys. But after I take my hands from the keyboard I get this message "Access keys activated" and it's on again. I don't get it. Maybe I messed it up.

I got rid of it after a reboot (it no longer turns itself on automatically) so I will mark it as resolved so that the developers don't get distracted by this report (I did press Ctrl to disable it but this feature still turned itself on; maybe I did somethig wrong somewhere).

Thank you again Maksim for your comment.

I've been having this isue recently... It just seems to turn on randomly, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. I can turn it off by pressing ctrl, but it will randomly switch back on. Any ideas?

sorry, it seems access keys kicked in whilst typing just now, and an incomplete post was added!

If I just sit watching this page, access keys appear t turn on and off about twice a minute, without me even using the computer.

Kind Regards,

Ian

I have exactly the same problem now Ian P. Christian was describing.
It is very difficult to write a comment while the Access Keys are showing up all the time. Even when I do nothing they just show up

I have 3.5.1 and its not resolved! Thats the reason why Konqeror is not usable as a web browser. I should switch to Firefox.

This bug is indeed extremely annoying. I have been having this bug for months and could not even report because I could not do screenshots and had no idea the problem is called "Access keys". I would have had to report a bug about "strange characters on the screen". I think a lot of people out there have this problem, but cannot report it because they do not know how to report it.

This is not a duplicate of 124218. 124218 says "Please give me a graphic possibility to switch off Access keys". This bug says "When you first encounter Access Keys, you think it is a bug, so, disable it per default".
Comment 14 Thiago Macieira 2006-05-15 23:20:51 UTC
Re-marking as duplicate. Don't undo it.

Access Keys will stay on by default until there is a GUI to configure it. When it can be configured, it can be turned off by default.
