Hi

I recently got a gmail account and was impressed with the search and archive feature. Just thought I'd request you guys to consider doing the same in Kmail.

How exactly you guys are going to do it I don't know and how much can one go on archiving is something I'm not certain about, but if it can be done... that would be super.

Regards

Rishi

Could you explain how it works for gmail then?

OK. I need to expand on how Gmail works. It basically has 5 folders.
- Inbox (for new mail when it comes)
- Sent Mail (for holding mail when you send)
- Spam (for holding mail that it thinks is spam)
- Trash (for holding mail that you trash)
- All Mail (for holding all mail expect spam and trash).

So when you finish read a message in your Inbox and would like to keep
it for future reference you click the archive button or 'y' (keyboard
shortcut). What happens is that it removes it from the inbox. But it
is still located in the All Mail folder for future reference. The only
time it moves out of the All Mail folder is if it is trash or you mark
it as spam.

Would you like me to send you a Gmail Invite so that you can see what
I'm talking about.

What I guess I'm saying is basically... I've been a Kmail user for the
past 2 years and now with Gmail on the scene, I've been pretty
impressed and was hoping to get these features on Kmail.

Do you know how the emails are archived? On harddisk? Compressed?

Comment 4 Rishi 2004-09-09 13:24:31 UTC
No I do not know how it is done on Gmail. However, would you guys like
a Gmail Invite? I have 6 new Gmail invites. If you can hack around and
figure out how to do it, it would be great. Also I've heard of
something called the GmailFS (Gmail File System) not sure if you can
see what this is all about and if it answers the question on weather
or not messages are compressed or not.
I suspect that it's probably not compressed because the search feature
is blazingly fast. I guess their indexing is also pretty good.
Searching for a mail in Gmail and Kmail is huge. I guess this has to
do with the server clustering and thus Kmail is limited because of it?

The feature is that you just have to hit one button to keep the mail, i.e. move it to the archive folder. This is easier than drag&drop or using the menu.
This could go along with bug 34382 (Automatic Archiving of Mail).

Hi

I'm updating my address book. Please click on the link below and enter your contact info for me:

http://ringo.com/i?uid=GE8jWh9SwrR3ASBB&

I'm using a new, free service where I put in my contact info for you, you put in your contact info for me, and everyone stays up to date automatically. It's surprisingly easy and useful.

Thanks for your help.

Rishi

now that developers are currently working on a gmail-conversation like GUI, I thought I would be creating a new ticket to ask something similar to this but actually complementary.

first, just to comment on this bug. Archive actually does not move the mail anywhere. the mail is always in the magic 'All Mail' folder. Archive only removes it from the inbox. I personnally always suggest to 'Label' your mail before archiving them. this way, you can more specifically and easily search for a mail. I never visit this huge and magic 'All Mail' folder.

so here is my feature request for KDE4 please. labels. instead of dragging mails into folders, I wish one mail could have multiple labels, and thus being archived. user would still have the hability to create folders, thus keeping the current behaviour. the 'All Mail' magic folder could simply be an automatic label. under the folder list, we could see a label list. I repeat ONE mail could have multiple Labels. and speed up the search feature please.

that + the conversation like threads. kmail is gonna rock the world. especially available for all plateform (win32+osx)

I'm so excited to recommend it to everybody I meet on the street.

Comment 8 Mathieu Jobin 2006-07-25 03:51:50 UTC
now, does this could work over standard mbox/maildir/imap format ?

Comment 9 Philippe Arnone 2007-04-03 14:11:12 UTC
I really agree with Mathieu Jobin. I really think that the label feature may become a killer feature.
Comment 10 David Sharnoff 2007-04-07 01:26:05 UTC
Labels are better than folders because a single message
can have more than one. They're not as good as folders
because in an IMAP environment, they don't play well with
other mail agents. Still worthwile.

What I REALLY want is a set keyboard-bindable actions to
move messages to particular folders. With this, I would
create an "Archive" folder and move things to it from my
INBOX instead of deleting them. This should be easy and
would let me use kmail instead of gmail. Right now, I'm
faced with the choice of leaving everyhing in my INBOX or
using multi-step/mouse actions to move things.

Another folder I would have is "Spam". If kmail would let
me run a program every time I move something to/from the
"Spam" folder, that would be great. That way I could feed
things back to sa-learn on my server, or whatever I needed
to do.

My goal: replace gmail with kmail+zimbra.

[fixed] If you click on folder (Right Button) you have option Archive, and you can compress and download it. Maybe it's not exactly like in gmail but working

Closing as fixed. If you disagree, please use kmail 2 and open a new report for kmail2 product. Thanks.
