Description Marcin Kasperski 2004-04-15 14:22:08 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources

I'd really like to have 'Compare with...' option in right-click konqueror file menu.

I can imagine the following reasonable ways of implementing that (ordered according to my preference):

a) Selecting 'Compare with...' opens the typical file selector. Important feature of this selector is that:
- it defaults to the directory recently used for this task and gives some drop-down to get some other directories recently used for komparison
- if I just accept the window having selected directory but not selecting the file, the file of the same name as the initial selection is used
(the main idea is to optimize amount of work needef when I compare /x/y/z/a.txt with /p/v/q/a.txt, then /x/y/z/b.txt with /p/v/q/b.txt, then ... - fairly frequent operation)

b) (somehow related to bug #79690) Immediately after I selected 'Compare with...' kompare starts with the selected file loaded in the left pane, the second file can be drag&dropped or selected using some menu.

c) (a bit related to 'Copy to...') 'Compare with' opens submenu. This submenu always contains 'Browse...' but also contains entries for recently used directories, maybe in this way (imagine we right-clicked /x/y/z/a.txt and selected Kompare with and /p/v/q/somefile was recently used for kompare target):
- if there exists /p/v/q/a.txt then it is present in this menu
- otherwise we have '/p/v/q >' submenu which opens the list of files or 'Browse /p/v/q...' which opens the file browser

d) (probably easiest to implement) After selecting 'Compare with' the window querying for the kompare objects displays (the same which is presently displayed when kompare is started without parameters), the first field is pre-filled with the selected file name, the second can be filled as usual (but would be really nice if it allowed for some kind of history)

My preffered solution for this would be to have a "compare files" action available in the konq context menu when 2 files of type text/* are selected. But i'm not sure konq context menus support such conditions when generating context menus.

Hello,

I vote for Comment #2 as well. I would like Kompare to load two files and compare them, if it is called with exactly two files as an argument. If its called with more, it could present a list (of which two have to be chosen) or exit with an appropriate error message.

This would require that kompare is called with %F or %U (I think) as parameter in the .desktop files, so that not several processes are started for each file.

This is gonna be a little spammy... I'm reassigning everything that's currently
assigned to bruggie (who's been the default assignee for bugs since time began)
to the new list address.

Bruggie: if you're working on one or more of these atm, please snatch 'em
back..

Everyone, esp. Joshua and Bruggie: if this genrates 33 mails, my sincere
apologies..
