Version: 3.1.3 (using KDE KDE 3.1.3) Installed from: Mandrake RPMs OS: Linux Currently Virtual Desktops are not too helpful because they are not unique with anything more than their wallpaper and so they serve no purpose but to keep your Kicker a little less cluttered. Virtual Desktops in KDE could be made a LOT more useful if a few basic features are added. To live up to it's name Virtual Desktops need to give the user the power to make each one as different as if it were a separate account. To realize this, it would need to start at the control center. At the top of the control center there should be 2 checkboxes: "[] current desktop" and "[] all desktops" _______________________________ |file| |view| |help| | _______________________________| |_|_|_| 2 checkboxes | | |________________________| |n | | | a | | |v | | | i | | |g | module | | a | | |t | | | i | | |o | | | n | | | | | |_____|________________________| In every other way apart from the 2 checkboxes the control center is exactly the same. Except now it allows the user to individualize each virtual desktop. This is incredibly useful because I set up each of my virtual desktops for separate purposes and so I often feel the need to have different icons, fonts etc. on different desktops. Now, we can go to the second step in making Virtual Desktops useful. - Session support for Virtual Desktops You should be able to save the way a virtual desktop is set up and load that at a later time. When you save it it should remember open applications on that desktop (where in those applications you were) and settings in the control center. A program putting most of my suggestions here to use is called Desktop keeper and its for ;( Windows. Try it out here http://www.greatis.com/desktopkeeper.htm if you have Winodws.
Probably, what wuld be easier both for developers and users, would be to adress this wish: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62157 If this is adressed it would be just as having unique desktops because each session would be saved completely and so that would include control center options (look n feel, web browsing etc), applications ( and place in them ) icons, menu items, EVERYTHING. If this is implemented it would render this wishlist useless for the most part.
Just to note, there's already an open wishlist report requesting more configureable items per virtual desktop (mainly icons). I'm leaving yours open since you're asking for much more.
Ok, sorry I didn't notice.
Additionally, I would like to be able to overlay a name with the background specific to each desktop. For example I might have "Work", "Media", "Email"... Even just "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2", "Desktop 3" would be helpful. To make things even cooler, I would like to bind key combinations to each desktop. "Ctrl-tab" is not bad for cycling, but I would also like to be able to press "alt-f1" for desktop 1, "alt-f2" for desktop 2, etc. This was a feature in an older version of GNOME, but even the newer versions don't do it.

" You can already do all that... Right-click desktop->Configure Desktop->Multiple Desktops lets you name your desktops, which can be put on the pager and probably more. And by default ctrl-f1, ctrl-f2 etc take you straight to that desktop, and the shortcut key can be changed in the Control Panel...
