Description Thomas Witzel 2002-11-17 01:23:46 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.99)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: gcc (GCC) 3.2 20020903 (Red Hat Linux 8.0 3.2-7)
OS: Linux

Whenever I open my home directory on the kde desktop, all the icons for my documents turn into nice previews but after 1 to 2 minutes my system becomes unusable. Logging in remotely shows that my Xserver grows up to 980 MB (the biggest I observed so far). When I kill kio_thumbnail (which is only about 10-30MB by itself at this point) the Xserver goes back to its "normal" 314MB size.
From the big size one can guess that I'am using an Nvidia graphics chip and its closed source driver. Maybe those issues are connected.

"top of the incident"

I made this snapshot from a windows boxed logged in remotely as my machine
won't respond anymore right after I opened my home directory on my desktop.
Killing the kio_thumbnail process seen on this list immediately makes my X
behave reasonably again.

Could this be related to some particular file in your home directory? When it happens,
are there still any previews pending? If so, the first file which should have a preview but
doesn't might be the "culprit". If you're able to identify the file that causes it, any chance
that you can send it to me directly or tell me what type and size of file it is?

Thanks,
-Malte

Could this be related somehow to this bug?

IMO it's not nvidia related, I can reproduce that bug and I've voodoo3.

The file that causes the problem

Here is the file which causes the problem. If I remove it the bug described
above will not occur. Note that other html files are previewed properly. Also
this file copied to an own directory will preview just fine. (strange, isn't it
?)
However now without the file all previews appear in seconds. The annoyance now
is that kio_thumbnail keeps at 92% CPU time even after I closed the window.
Comment 5 Thomas Witzel 2002-11-25 06:08:32 UTC
Actullay I rebuilt today (11/24 11pm) kdelibs from CVS and the kio_thumbnail eating the CPU
time goes away. My .html file still makes it eat all the memory. Other html files with the same
name won't.

With me this problem occurs since I changed the references to some files so
staroffice will open a .doc instead of the previous not making sense app. <br>
I am running SuSE 8.1 unpatched. And this bug is highly annoying since I don't
have to much memory and the machine will go and swap very quick.<br>
The problem will occur once I use the konqueror find function. For now I run a
kill script which kills all kio_thumbnail processes every 10 seconds. That is
not a great solution, and it doesn't prevent very slow moments.
