Description koenig 2002-06-21 07:21:47 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kmail
Version: 1.4 (using KDE 3.0.0 )
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: SuSE
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (SuSE)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.18-4GB
OS/Compiler notes:

When switching sorting columns in kmail to
and fro e.g. date to sender and back to date
kmail keeps the subkind of sorting but the direction is always set to downwards. If your standard sorting order is upwards you
have to cycle e.g. through the different subkinds of datesorting which can be especially annoying if long folders are stored on nfs-mounted filesystems.

I confirm this also, however I think it is usability bug, not a wish. Choosing _another_ column is what it is -- choosing another column. Not changing the order of sorting for chosen one.

Btw. I did a small test and it appears that KMail sorts mails by single column. I don't know if I should another report so I write it here. There should be multi column sorting -- so choosing _another_ column doesn't change the sorting mode for chosen column, but makes it more important in sorting.

Let's say I have
Subject + Sender + ^Date^
and than I click on sender
Subject + ^Sender^ + Date

so Kmail should sort first by Sender, then by Date, and then by Subject. But all modes in _this_ case should be preserved.

If I click again on sender the columns sort order should not change but Sender mode -- yes!

This bug is 6 years old and it is (for me at least) the most annoying "feature" of KDE. Is anyone working on this?

Thanks!

i believe new message list in kmail from kde 4.2 resolves the bug

Tested on KDE 4.3.3 and this seems to be fixed.
