Description Jw 2002-05-29 15:22:16 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kmail
Version: 1.4 (using KDE 3.0.0 )
Severity: normal
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
Compiler: Not Specified
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Linux jw 2.4.18-4GB #1 Wed Mar 27 13:57:05 UTC 2002 i686 unknown

I have asked before for have a "Delete mail from server after x number of days" widget next to the "Delete mail from server" option.

People like me who have a very high volume of email traffic and have more than one computer checking thier pop3 email have problems with a simple 'don't delete mail fom server' because the spool file on the server just grows and grows with no way to ever clear it out. Eventually the Postmaster has to rm messages from the spool by hand.

I belive the best way is to have a setting that allows messages to be deleted from the server after they are <x> number of days old.

Eudora supports this feature Outlook Express (and I think Outlook) does and almost everyone I know uses it. There is really no good way to check the same pop3 account on multiple computers without a function like this.

Manually setting the delete-from-server to "on" every once in a while is not only a nuisance but you're garunteed to rm at least a few emails that have not yet been dlownloaded by one of the other MUAs.

It was once suggested to me that I could use a pop filter to do this but setting <age in days > <is greater than or equal to> <x> never actually deletes any messages from the server.

I consider this a bug in the Pop Filters. If you tell the filter to rm mail from the server that has an age in days >= 3 I expect it to rm messages that are 3 or more days old.

I actually consider it a bug in the general pop3 settings but I realise others don't see it that way. Nonetheless it inhibits me from using Kmail as a fully functional mail client because I must either check my mail with a different MUA that supports this feature or rm mails from the spool by hand.

Did you enable "Filter mail on server" in the configuration of your POP=20
server and did you set "Size of messages to filter" to a low value=20
e.g. 1 so that every message is filtered?

Unfortunately I don't know if the POP filters only filter newly arrived=20
messages or if they always filter all messages. My guess is that they=20
only filter newly arrived messages (which means it wouldn't work for=20
you).

Ingo

Yes In Configure KMail > Network > Recving > {Add|Modify} Account > Genera=
l tab

and did you set "Size of messages to filter" to a low value

Size of messages to Filter: 1.

On 1 message I got something about a message exceding the maximum size limi=
t -- what did I want to do with it?
I checked the radio button under the green check mark.=20
There is no text saying what those different options mean and no tool tips=
 - I have no idea what the different options mena and I doubt many other p=
eople do either. Very un-intuitive.
You can see a picture of that here:

http://ccs008.claborn.net/~jw/img/kmail_popfilter_warning_snapshot1.png

I am completely unable to understand what that's all about especially as i=
t only seems to be a few message that "excede the maximum size limit".

Also the KDE KMail manual indicates that "Delete mail from server" will del=
ete matching messages without downloading them.=20
I wonder if that will properly apply to messages that were previously donwl=
oading them -- if KMail is skipping them by message ID entireyly it's prob=
ably not filtering them in order to know that they are "now" old.

I belive you are correct. This is such a maddening issue it seems so small=
yet it is preventing me from really using Kmail.
In the process it is also preventing me from finally doing away with my la=
st Win2k install :-/ unless I want to comit myself to constantly rming mesa=
ge from the pop3 spool up on the server by hand - which is not the goal.

What do other people do -- just let their spool file grow forever?

There is a patch available with bug #49989 to give options for delete after x days, keep only y messages & keep only z MBs of messages.

Note that "delete after n days" has already been added to the development version of KMail. The other two options mentioned in wish #49989 are going to be added soon.
