(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***) Package: kmail Version: 1.3.2 (using KDE 2.2.2 -2) Severity: wishlist Installed from: Red Hat Linux 7.2 Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98) OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.7-10 OS/Compiler notes: My Windows Eudora mail client has the option to leave mail on the server for N days where N is a number the user can set. This is useful to me for the following reason: I have a laptop which I use when at home or traveling and I would like to keep all my incoming messages on both the laptop and my Linux machine. I could do this setting Eudora to leave incoming mail onthe server for (say) 30 days and doing the same for KMail. Then no matter which machine checked the mail first all messages would be retrieved [provided I check the mail more often than every 30 days from both machines] (Submitted via bugs.kde.org) (Called from KBugReport dialog)

This=20 version has POP filters with the help of which you should be able to=20 delete messages from the server which are older than 30 days. But please note that leaving messages on the server only works if the=20 server supports the UIDL command. If the server doesn't support this=20 command you will get duplicate messages in KMail. I'm afraid but this should not work. If you choose not to delete mails from server also the pop filter will leave the mails on the server they are just not downloaded. So the space is still used on the server. Also if you donloaded the mail it will not be filterd any more. Maybe I can ad this feature if I have some spare time. Thorsten
In my case, we have several email accounts of which several people access them from a POP3 server. Unfortunately, I have to manually log onto the webmail server to delete older emails. The Eudora 'Delete after N days' feature was a plus for me in this respect.
Only because it has been so long... Is something planned for this? A "delete from server after X days" feature would be great. Thanks, Dave
I implemented support for this some weeks ago, and posted it to the mailing list. My original mail (with the patch) can be found here (it's against KMail 1. 5, so it will probably need some updating before it can be applied to the latest CVS version): http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-pim&m=105691856812903&w=2
Subject: Re: Leave on server for N days I had a quick look at this patch and liked what I saw. I certainly think this is a nice feature and should be included in KMail. KMail is currently in feature freeze and the earliest possible time for inclusion into the developmental version of KMail is January 2004. I'll have another look at the patch then, and if I still like it I'll lobby the other core developers to include the patch/feature or some derivative of it into CVS. Don.
whould be really nice!!! its something I desperately miss... now I simply dont delete the mails, and sometimes do it by hand, but sometimes I forget, and my account is full, so I dont recieve mails... :(
A little bit sad to see this isn't in KMail 1.7 still. Any plans on this still? Thanks, Dave M
Isn't this a duplicate of http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49989?
No, especially since this one is older... although the discussed wish is similar. --Dave
Originally, I saw this feature on the list for KDE 3.4. However, it is no longer on the KDE 3.4 feature list... Will this feature be in the release of KMail 1.8? I hope so, this is sort of a big one for me personally. Any update (good or bad) would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Dave M
it's not in KDE 3.4 (just checked). :( well, let's wait for 3.5 :D
Patch committed last night to implement this. I'll wait for confirmations from people that it works before closing, but it works just fine for me

This problem is the reason I use Thunderbird. I would rather use Kmail, but I have no choice. I have to use Thunderbird. Thunderbird gives you the option of leaving mail on the server for as long as you do not delete it in your inbox. This is the most logical and natural way of doing this. I need to be able to access my messages from any computer through webmail. So, messages have to stay on the server. But, if I leave them on the server, I would have to delete them once in KMail and once again using the web interface. Too much work for such a lazy person like myself. At some point I got tired of all this deleting and switched to Thunderbird. What surprises me, is that KMail has so many features (most of them I will never use, and for some of them I don't even know what their purpose is), but doesn't handle its primary task well, which is getting messages from a server. I can hardly imagine that somebody would want to keep every single message on the server. On the other hand, it is definitely imaginable that one would want to keep some messages on the server. So, people who want to either keep all messages on the server or delete all of them are hardly too many. Why not do it the same way Thunderbird does it? Or, at least, why not to add another menu item next to the one which says "Delete" when one right-clicks a message, which would read "Delete on server"? That would be enough for me. It is probably not too hard to implement.

Fikret I'll be starting work on that feature shortly. I can't say how long it might take as I haven't looked in to how much coding is needed yet, but I'll keep people informed when I get going on it. (I'll post to bug #31114)
This wish has finally been implemented. Thanks Rich!
thanx from me too! good work...
You're welcome. It was my pleasure :) Rich
Really fantastic news... my thanks as well. Excuse my ignorance here, but anywhere we can obtain a patch/diff/rpm so we can add this extremely useful feature into our current installations? Thanks, Dave M
I think you have to wait for 3.5, or diff it yourself from the svn servers... or check out the svn commit log, and find and apply the code. but little chance it applies cleanly agains anything earlier than 3.4 i guess...
