the clock tip

Version: unspecified (using Devel)
OS: Linux

Look at the screenshot

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Hover over the clock plasmoid (in my case in a panel).

Actual Results:
Local 18:05
Friday 17 December 2010

Madrid:18:05, Friday 17 December 201
0

Expected Results:
Local: (Madrid) 18:05
Friday, 17 December 2010
Comment 1 Sujith H 2010-12-19 07:57:08 UTC
I think the output is clear. The local time in my machine is pointing to
Asia/Kolkata. If I change the timezone to Madrid, then the result is:

Local 12:24 PM
Sunday, December 19, 2010
Madrid: 07:55AM, Sunday, December 19, 2010

Doesn't this result helps people who are not in Madrid?
Comment 2 Jaime Torres 2010-12-19 09:34:32 UTC
My main problem there is (look at the screenshot) that the year is split in two lines:
201
0
And yes, sorry, The time in two timezones is shown..
Therefore, I think this format could be better:

Local
  12:24 PM, Sunday, December 19, 2010
Madrid
  07:55 AM, Sunday, December 19, 2010
Comment 3 Anne-Marie Mahfouf 2010-12-19 11:06:17 UTC
I reproduced.
It happens when you have local + 1 timezone and when you restart plasma-desktop.
If you add a second timezone then it seems to be OK. If you remove the second one it stays OK until you restart plasma-desktop.
Initialization size problem.

And yes I agree the displayed format should be more consistent!

Yes I agree it should be consistent.

Yep, restructuring the tooltip is necessary, so will have to wait until post-stringfreeze.

The workaround in Comment #3 doesn't work. I've got two extra time zones and the last digit of the year is still getting wrapped. This is with KDE 4.6.0 on openSUSE 11.4.
Comment 10 Jaime Torres 2011-09-17 09:39:17 UTC
The problem is in Qt wordwrapping what must not be wrapped. I know because I've tried hard to fix it in the KDE code, without success.

The workaround at comment #3 works (at least for me), just add more timezones.

Screenshot showing wrapped lines in clock tooltip

It doesn't only wrap the last char of each line here, but the last 3 ones.
See attached screenshot.

Using:
KDE SC 4.7.1
Qt 4.7.2
Comment 12 Aaron J. Seigo 2011-09-24 17:51:30 UTC
required some changes to translated strings, but it is fixed. due to the string changes, will only be in 4.8.
Comment 13 Ph. Marek 2011-10-13 09:39:48 UTC
Is there a way to use the short names, like "Thu" instead of "Thursday" and
"Oct" instead of "October"? Should save enough width to make it fit, too.

Although that would be just a "temporary hack", but no real solution, you can do this:

→ Systemsettings
→ Locale
→ Date & Time
→ Long date format
