Description Alex 2009-01-17 23:22:57 UTC
Version: (using KDE 3.5.10)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

I know the game with 4 times 1x1, 3 times 1x2, 2 times 1x3 and 1 1x4 ships. I would really like to configure the number of ships, because its boring if you almost always hit water.
Comment 1 Dmitry Suzdalev 2009-01-17 23:55:11 UTC
I guess this would be against the rules of the original game...
Comment 2 Alex 2009-01-18 15:05:27 UTC
Who cares, it should be configurable, not the default ;). So YOU can decide, how many ships the players have. Is this a problem in compatiblity with other battleship-network-games?

And as i played yesterday, it was just pretty boring shooting into water all the time, because there were only these four ships.

The rules of the original game are already being broken?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship_%28game%29 lists 1x2, 2x3, 1x4, 1x5
Right now we have 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, 1x4
Comment 4 Alex 2010-05-24 20:42:44 UTC
okay, it happens only with my profile :(.

Jaime Torres just implemented a new game mode with the following setup:

Size of Ship | Number of Ships
         1 4
         2 3
         3 2
         4 1

Going to be shipped on next KDE release cycle. 4.13, I suppose.

I did not see the commit, but are you sure you want to close this bug? Instead of fixed game modes it would be really nice to be able to configure the numbers and the size of the gamefield as well.

I'm reopening it. But currently I haven't the time and interest needed to work on this. Perhaps someone else with more time available may work on this feature.

anyway, thanks for the new mode, will try it as soon as the kde version ships for my distro :).

What I would consider the classic battleship game and probably the most played, the tabletop plastic pegboard version sold at toy stores, looks to have always used 5 ships of sizes 5, 4, 3, 3, and 2. This is mostly all I want to be able to do, so even if its just a selection between the different styles (4,3,2,1, and 5,4,3,3,2) that would be awesome.

and i totally agree with the other related bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37737
a ship with size 1 often leads to both sides just randomly shooting back and forth until someone by luck hits that dam 1x1 sized ship, removing the little bit of strategy there was

i contacted the email list and got a response from someone saying they actually did implement the ability to customize ship #/size and it just needs to be added to the GUI, so hopefully someone can do this easily? http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-games-devel&m=141223359905806&w=2

thanks!

I guess for the "multiple ships" mode the field should be a bit bigger.

What about a config dialog: Width x Height, Number of ships 1,2,3,4?
