Description Bruno Virlet 2008-11-12 18:07:20 UTC
Version:            (using Devel)
Installed from:    Compiled sources

I think my bug is probably related to NVidia drivers. I'm using the version 177.80.

The problem is following:
The system tray is black, I can't see any icons. Sometimes I see a black square (without the plasma gradient) as an icon.

I have the problem both when I use KWin compositing and when I don't use it.

I think this bug is problematic because it really prevents me from using a lot of things. For instance I can't use KNetworkManager since it's only accessible in the system tray.

If this bug is related to my graphics card (GeForce 8400) then it could be a problem for a lot of people. Is it possible to disable some options like transparency which maybe would make the systray look bad on some config but at least work?

I'm available for further tests of course!

Thanks!

Hello,

Can you reproduce the bug with an older version of the binary driver or with the free 2D nv driver too?

Thanks.
Comment 2 Bruno Virlet 2008-11-12 23:41:26 UTC
Hello,

I tried with NVidia drivers 173.14, 177.67 and 177.80 and I still have the same issue. I could not try easily with nv drivers (I have to figure out how to install them and I can't break my config right now).

Is there some code I could try to change in the systray which would be likely to make it work, even if not perfectly?

Hi Bruno,

You do not have to install the nv drivers, they are provided with X. Just use "nv" as the video driver instead of nvidia.

Thanks.

Except for being nvidia and for the "unable to click them" part, this looks like bug 170283.
Comment 5 Bruno Virlet 2008-11-13 04:16:17 UTC
Yes this is quite similar but I have not this option enabled.

I also tested with the nv driver and I still have the same problem.
Comment 6 Bruno Virlet 2008-11-14 20:12:27 UTC
Same problem after updating to last svn packages (I have the new taskbar style which is awesome!)

Is there some log somewhere or something I could do to check whether it comes from the graphics or from something else. Since changing the driver didn't led to any change maybe the problem comes from something else.

Hi Bruno,

Have you tried to remove your plasma config to see if it has any effect?

Thanks,

This doesn't change anything. And since the Opensuse default theme is Aya, I see the same problem with this theme also.

When I run Plasma in the konsole, I have these messages:

QPainter::begin: Painter already active
QPainter::end: Painter not active, aborted
QPainter::begin: Painter already active
QPainter::end: Painter not active, aborted
QPainter::begin: Cannot paint on a null pixmap

This is not a NVidia problem as I use Intel chipset and drivers.
Comment 11 FiNeX 2008-11-18 17:24:23 UTC
Moreover I'm using NVIDIA (and trunk) and I can see icons in system tray :-)
Comment 12 Andrew Lake 2008-11-19 03:24:04 UTC
Same problem here.
- Clean compile from trunk
- Intel GMA X3100 (965)
- KDE 4.1 (all minor versions) works with no issues on same machine.

If there's any additional info I can provide let me know.
Comment 13 Jason Stubbs 2008-11-19 03:27:51 UTC
The output of

grep -i systemtray ~/.xsession-errors-:1

(or whatever it's called) might help.
Comment 14 Aaron J. Seigo 2008-11-19 03:39:14 UTC
working with Bruno on irc, as soon as he upgraded his Qt to the latest 4.4 (4.4.3 or qt-copy + patches) the problem was resolved.
Comment 15 Roger Larsson 2008-11-19 20:47:42 UTC
Is this good enough?
OpenSuSE does not yet provide 4.4.3 (latest is 4.4.0-12.4)

http://techbase.kde.org/Schedules/KDE4/4.2_Requirements
does only require 4.4 (in a previous version of that file it said 4.4.2,
would that have been enough?)

I have now updated it to 4.4.3

I have an ATI RadeonHD 2600 card and am using the radeonhd drivers and encounter this problem. It also happens on a new UNIX user account. I'm using Mandriva Linux Cooker.

In addition, I'd like to note that I have qt4-4.5.1-2mdv2010.0.src.rpm and am still running into this problem. What should I do?

Oh! And I can click my icons all right. They are there - they are just not visible. So it may not be the same bug.

I do not believe that this is a KDE bug, and believe it is not an nvidia bug either. Please see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=197141#c7

Thanks.
