Description Maciej Pilichowski 2008-11-08 11:42:24 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.3)

help with "new root shell"

I already saw:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=152666

It is really a pity of this wontfix, because Konsole in KDE4 will simply ignore all the workflow of KDE users. Millions of users of KDE now have to each, one by one, recreate their environment. Let's say it takes 10 minutes per user, let's say there is only one million of KDE users, it makes waste of 19 person-years! Scary.

So my wish would be:
a) provide a preset
a.1) user does not like it at all -- she/he deletes it (I doubt it, user who runs konsole is rather a power-user)
a.2) it does not work -- user edits it

b) provide downloadable (from local disk) preset -- so in order to "activate" this function user has to load it from disk

c) describe in details in Konsole help KDE3 migration common cases -- this is one of it

ad.a) this is time saver right-away, my favourite but wontfix as I already saw

ad.b) in such case this is my next favourite

ad.c) help is no harm, at least it help reduce some time wasting in recreating previous settings&environment

Bottom line is -- KDE4 is next version of KDE3, so except the bugs all features (not the internals) from KDE3 should be present in KDE4. But if you must interfere with upgrade, please ease down the process of the upgrading.

Don't trust wontfixes ;-)

Sorry for the lengthy report -- the preset is already there, as I wished, inactive.
Comment 2 Robert Knight 2008-11-09 22:07:40 UTC
The preset isn't shipped with Konsole. I have made clear why there is no preset and so far most people have supported my reasoning.

No - if we took this approach we would accumulate an awful lot of unsupportable cruft over time. Obviously the decision to remove a 'feature' (or 'bug' even) that was in a previous version has to be taken carefully because it will undoubtedly impact some users - however it is necessary to maintain the quality of the software.

You mean in the other report?

If yes, I didn't see compelling reasoning and even single "good idea" (rather "well, pity, ok" agreement). To keep comment short -- adding it as hidden preset (not present in the menu by default) would save time for all users by one decision, and on the other hand will get this item from the menu, if you dislike it so much.

And about discouraging people from using it -- you don't know the workflow. Using it instead of sudo is already more tiresome, but running sudo in a sequence for several commands is less comfortable than root shell. So, as usual, don't judge what users should do in order to get _their_ job done.

And there is also one advantage of the root shell for now -- easy visual difference between root shell and regular shell. Not the case for sudo.
Comment 4 Maciej Pilichowski 2008-11-10 08:38:04 UTC
PS. Anyway, help (I mean "manual") with info about creating root shell would be welcome for those who don't have this preset.

Generally speaking, I find it more reliable to accomplish this by wrapping su/sudo with user binaries.

(I don't use "root shells" as such. When I run 'su', konsole switches color schemes, the "real" su asks for a password... and when I exit the su shell, konsole switches back to the normal color scheme.)

kionsole is an important app but looks to me like all the features of kde3 konsole are not going to happen :( . I cannot install kde4 if this is the way it will be. konsole ,konq filemanager mode, etc really disapointing
