Version: svn (using KDE Devel) Installed from: Compiled sources OS: Linux KDE 3.5 has a root session icon in the file menu which is very useful for starting a root shell. KDE 4 should have a similar feature that logs in as root. I realize it might be possible to do with a custom session, it is much easier to have this as a built-in.
> I realize it might be possible to do with a custom session, > it is much easier to have this as a built-in. It should be trivial: 1. Settings -> Manage Profiles 2. Click 'New Profile' 3. Choose a name for the profile 4. Write a suitable command for creating a "root shell" (eg. sudo $SHELL) 5. Click OK > KDE 3.5 has a root session icon in the file menu > which is very useful for starting a root shell Unfortunately it doesn't work on a large number of systems because, depending on the distribution and version, there will be different ways of initiating a shell which runs with root priviledges - su vs sudo for example. I'm also concerned as to whether encouraging people to run the shell as root is a good idea, as opposed to 'sudo'ing only commands which require root permissions.
Thanks, I will try your suggestion. Your comments sound reasonable, but there are times for some of us when we just have to have a long session as root. Maybe we could change the feature request to have a feature that automatically highlights the tab or changes its colors if you are logged in as root. Its a nice clear indication that it is a root console.
I don't know about you, but my Konsole in kde3 has a red background for root sessions. Konsole in kde4 will make this even better since I will be able to have this working without having to use dcop, which means it can work at least for 'su' in remote sessions, leaving only root login over telnet not working. For root tabs, this is trivial to set up; just have that session use a different scheme (i.e. how I get my red background).

I could do that for local activities at least, making such a feature work if you log in as root on another computer via SSH would be more difficult.
For reasons outlined above, I will not include a profile that starts a root shell out of the box with Konsole, although it is easy to create one if you wish. There is a separate wish that came up asking for some automatic visual indication when the foreground activity in a shell is running as root - I think it would be best to put that in a separate bug report.
Please change the resolution to FIXED because it is really misleading. This preset is put in Konsole (KDE4.1.3).
Hi why is it it was there in kde3 and worke but now its like going back to the stone age. I do not know how to set most of the Sessions(now File on the menu of konsole) but all the good things we had are gone and refused to be put back :( .I use this app every day and now I'm looking at staying with kde3 because most of what i want and others are asking to be put back can take a hike :( konsole progress is a real disappointment. Most of us would have been fine to know it just isn't done Yet. but I see everything I need and have no idea how to setup are gone and some we can't even set up now. So much now is the turtle(long scenic route way)approach. going from something that work quick and great to slow and irritating ,annoying. sad
