Description Aniket 2008-07-31 19:36:23 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.0)
Installed from: Fedora RPMs
Compiler: GCC 4.3
OS: Linux

Hi,

I have kde 4.1.0 installed through fedora rawhide. Initially , the ALT+F1 shortcut worked fine for the Kmenu, but , once I accidentally deleted the Kickoff Menu widget from the panel, and then readded it through add widgets. And after that the Alt+F1 has stopped working for me.

I dont think there is anything wrong with my keyboard setup , as ALT+F2 for krunner works fine.
Comment 1 Aaron J. Seigo 2008-07-31 21:28:34 UTC
that's because the menu doesn't magically grab the shortcut, it needs to be associated with it (think of having multiple menus, alternative menus, etc.)

what you are missing, however, is a GUI to set the shortcut. this is on the 4.2 feature plan, so let's see how well we do with that =)

Ok..thats gr8..
but any pointers as to how I can get that functionality back in my setup , right now..even if it means editing some text config files..I am up for it!
Comment 3 Aaron J. Seigo 2008-07-31 22:01:14 UTC
in plasma-appletsrc, look for plugin=launcher

the group name should be something like: [Containments][#][Applets][#]

add a new group like this:

[Containments][#][Applets][#][Shortcuts]
global=Alt+F1
Comment 4 Aniket 2008-07-31 22:11:42 UTC
Ok ..kool it works gr8
In fact I just figured this out from the plasma-appletsrc file of a new test user I created.

Looking forward to seeing this via GUI in KDE 4.2

OK, this thing doesnt work if I am running Compiz as my window manager. If I switch back to Kwin, Alt+F1 works fine
Comment 7 Aaron J. Seigo 2008-08-01 20:25:18 UTC
i assume that compiz is grabbing Alt+F1 then, and there's no way for us to coordinate these things; this is one more reason for having a well integrated window manager imho.

it also brings up the issue of a x-level global shortcuts management system .. but ... yeah, let's not go into that mess right now ;)

The bug still exists in kde 4.1.1 in the normal arch-packages (not kdemod). Alt-F1 doesn't work.
Comment 11 George Kiagiadakis 2008-09-23 20:29:29 UTC
I think this is a bug because in systemsettings->keyboard & mouse->keyboard shortcuts->plasma workspace, there is a setting for "application launcher" and it is set to Alt+f1, however it does not work. I tried the hack in comment 3 but it doesn't seem to work for me, Strangely, if I create a new user with clean configuration, alt+f1 works there.

I really went mad at working around this(similar issue as #11) and finally succeeded.
So the workaround is to first ensure you have followed comment #3.
After this, remove the application launcher entry from kglobalshortcutsrc, log out and log in again.
It should work now hopefully.

A small update:
I ran compiz in kde4 using fusion-icon , and alt-f1 still works. But if I set window manager as compiz in system settings, then alt+f1 doesnt work.

Fixed in trunk for 4.2

The behaviour of Show the plasma dashboard is still missing some feature. After showing dashboard how would you drag any widget from desktom into task bar?
Comment 17 Chani 2009-03-10 19:32:20 UTC
er... hmm. I expected that if I hit ctrl-f12 while dragging it would drag the widget out of the dashboard, but it doesn't.

but that has absolutely nothing to do with this bugreport on keyboard shortcuts, so if you want to continue talking about it please create a new bugreport.

Sorry, I'm not experienced in describing bugs. You are right. See <link rel="new one" href="show_bug.cgi?id=186810">.
