I can't perform a multiple selection of icons on the desktop. When I click the mouse and drag it, the selection box appears, but as soon as I release the mouse button it vanishes with no apparent effect and no icon remains selected.

Kde version is 4.0.1 installed from Kubuntu packages on a Kubuntu 7.10 system.
