Description James Pike 2008-01-03 08:29:00 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler:          g++ 4.2.2
OS: Linux

If you press alt and tab together nothing appears. Windows don't switch. Nothing happens.
Comment 1 Lubos Lunak 2008-01-04 18:13:04 UTC
Works perfectly fine here. Does the shortcut work for something else? Does it work with different keyboard layout?
Comment 2 romain arcila 2008-01-05 20:36:34 UTC
I've got this bug too.
Alt tab does not work unless the windows about keyboard and mouse in system settings is open. As soon as i close it, Alt-tab does not work anymore
Comment 3 Bernd Steinhauser 2008-01-06 05:37:59 UTC
> Works perfectly fine here. Does the shortcut work for something else? Does it work with different keyboard layout?

I've got this issue, too (although it never works for me, even not with systemsettings opened like described in comment 2).

The problem is not the key combination, if I set keyboard layout switch to Alt+Tab, it does work.
I've set "Walking through windows" once to Alt+e and once to Strg+k, both didn't work.
So it _is_ the shortcut, that is broken, not the key or the key combination.

I think, that it is related to the fact, that Alt+Shift+Tab (Reverse walking...) does work since 2 or 3 days and I think, about the same time, Alt+Tab stopped working (worked before).
Comment 4 Rune Rønde Møller 2008-01-06 08:39:15 UTC
I can reproduce this behaviour simply by clicking on the Country or region: "change..." link and then "Add Language" -> Danish in the "Locale" tab in Country/Region & Language in System Settings. Changing Keyboard Layout doesnt make it work. Everything works fine though when when I use the default settings.
Comment 5 James Pike 2008-01-06 15:15:09 UTC
Alt-tab doesn't work for me with the default configuration and after rm -rf .kde4 + restart. I'm surprised it works for some people.

This is a screenshot showing my keyboard shortcuts menu

There are no keyboard shortcuts by default for me, and no way for me to enter
new keyboard shortcuts or use any dialogs in this menu.
Comment 7 James Pike 2008-01-10 09:44:34 UTC
kded4 won't load with startkde, if i run kded4 manually and then restart kwin after loading kde alt-tab will work.
Comment 8 Bernd Steinhauser 2008-01-10 10:45:50 UTC
Please reopen this bug.

I can't get it working, neither with restarting/starting kded4 manually (it gets loaded on my computer), nor with restarting kwin.
Comment 9 Lubos Lunak 2008-01-10 11:03:41 UTC
Reopening, playing with kded manually is certainly not a fix.
Comment 10 James Pike 2008-01-10 11:15:45 UTC
But the error is with kded4 not opening by default not alt-tab behaviour. The bug should be renamed or a new bug opened.
Comment 11 Sergey 2008-01-16 15:58:42 UTC
i have this bug too. On clean system too.
Comment 12 Sergey 2008-01-16 16:11:23 UTC
This bug is currently unconfirmed?? This is really hard bug. I can't switch windows, can't switch desktops, can't restore minimized windows and many other related problems.
Comment 13 Martin Flöser 2008-01-16 20:55:02 UTC
Unfortunatelly I reproduced this bug by adding German language support. I also had to delete my .kde4 directory. Alt+Tab is working, now. But switching workspaces has never worked since running KDE 4.
Comment 14 Lubos Lunak 2008-01-18 17:41:53 UTC
Please do not mix several unrelated things.
Shortcuts not working at all with En locale -> this bugreport.
Problems because of locale -> bug #156121.
Some (not all) shortcuts missing -> bug #155650.
Shortcuts stop working after configuring them -> bug #156120.
Comment 15 Lubos Lunak 2008-01-18 17:42:51 UTC
*** Bug 155429 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Comment 16 David Faure 2008-01-21 13:36:23 UTC
Note:
killall kded4; kded4 & ; killall kwin ; kwin& ; killall krunner ; krunner &
is a workaround to get keyboard shortcuts to work again after something goes wrong (e.g. after #156120 hits).
Comment 17 81joe81 2008-01-29 08:59:13 UTC
I can confirm that with the commands sequence suggested by David Faure in comment #16 the shortcuts start to work again, and they work for all the session.
Thanks for this "workaround"
Comment 18 John Morris 2008-01-29 18:26:46 UTC
How's this for strange: The keyboard shortcuts work fine if I run kde4 under Xgl, but I suffer from this problem is I run it under the regular xorg server.
Comment 19 Bernhard Rosenkraenzer 2008-01-29 20:44:26 UTC
Comment #18 may well be an indication that this is a timing issue (see also bug 156390)
Comment 20 juanjux 2008-02-07 23:18:55 UTC
Well, same here. The keyboard shorcuts only worked once, after a lot of time fiddling with the settings window. And shortly after that, it stopped working anyway.
Comment 21 Bernhard Rosenkraenzer 2008-02-08 09:39:30 UTC
The problem went away for me after upgrading to the current git xserver. Maybe we're triggering an X bug somewhere...

By any chance, is everyone running into this running xserver 1.4?
Comment 22 Mikko C. 2008-02-08 14:41:28 UTC
My shortcuts won't work in any way described in the comments above.
Even comment #16.

My keyboard settings are also empty like: http://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=22888&action=view

Xorg version:
X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90
Comment 23 Marcel Partap 2008-02-08 19:22:35 UTC
#21: Yes Bernhard running x11-base/xorg-server-1.4.0.90-r3, same problems as everyone.. next Xorg release will be march 1st. Only three more weeks to salvation ;)
Comment 24 Brian Vuyk 2008-02-11 15:48:58 UTC
Just confirming that that David Faure's workaround in #16 restored the alt-tab and alt-f2 functionality for the currently running session.
Comment 25 Mikko C. 2008-02-11 16:35:39 UTC
My problem was related to kded4 not being started at login.

I solved by disabling the "Nepomuk Server" service.
System Settings -> Advanced -> Service Manager.

You guys might want to try that :)
Comment 26 81joe81 2008-02-11 18:22:29 UTC
Unfortunately disabling the "Nepomuk Server" service doesn't work for me: kded4 does not start, and I have to do it manually to let the shortcuts work
Comment 27 Sebastian Kratzert 2008-02-13 09:11:30 UTC
I can canfirm that not Nepomuk has an influence on that.
After disabling it and restarting kde, kded4 runs again and the shortcuts work.
Comment 28 juanjux 2008-02-14 22:16:26 UTC
Re-confirmed. Disabling the Nepomuk service fixed this problem on my computer.
Comment 29 Kevin 2008-04-07 20:19:42 UTC
For me shortcuts work after starting kde, but then, they suddenly stop working (maybe sth crashes???)

Comment 30 James Pike 2008-04-08 06:27:41 UTC
Since svn builds from around 2 weeks ago alt-tab starts off only working sporadically, and then after using it about 30-100 times all of a sudden starts working perfectly.
Comment 31 Ivo Anjo 2008-04-08 13:20:56 UTC
I also have this problem, but as suggested I just ran kded4 and got my shortcuts back. Running Xorg 7.2.0 .
Comment 32 Andreas Hartmetz 2008-06-26 18:06:08 UTC
There were several kded4 problems which affected global shortcuts too. They should be fixed now. There were also changes for the better in global shortcuts code which are probably not relevant here. Bug reporters, please report again if the bug/s is/are *still* there in revent svn versions or Betas.
Comment 33 David Durham 2008-06-26 18:26:59 UTC
This bug is fixed in my version (latest kubuntu)
Comment 34 juanjux 2008-06-28 18:35:15 UTC
I'm testing 4.0.84 and I've no problems now. Good catch!
Comment 35 juanjux 2008-06-28 18:40:29 UTC
*** This bug has been confirmed by popular vote. ***
Comment 36 Andreas Hartmetz 2008-07-04 13:02:51 UTC
Gah, I'll just re-unconfirm this bug again some time after the release of 4.1. Anyone who still can reproduce it with a 4.1 beta or (later) 4.1.x, please add comments and don't just re-confirm the bug. I have no way of knowing if there is still something wrong in the latest version otherwise. Things seem to be working fine for me...
Comment 37 Andreas Hartmetz 2008-09-13 01:43:24 UTC
This really should be fixed now, I haven't heard or seen any problems in months.
