Version: 1.2.5 (using KDE KDE 3.5.7) Installed from: SuSE RPMs OS: Linux When the summary view is refreshed, the new messages pane does not update itself. New messages are shown therein only after KMail checks for new mail, after which the info is immediately pushed into this pane. Shouldn't Summary view refresh also cause KMail to check for new mail in monitored folders? Now it doesn't actually refresh anything in that pane, as it causes KMail not to do anything. The only way to refresh the new messages pane is to open KMail component and ask it to check for new mail, or wait till KMail's next periodic mail check if it is scheduled to do so. If I need to quickly find out whether new messages have arrived, I'd presume I simply refresh the summary view. That's what it is for, isn't it? If I need to open a component to get updated info, the summary becomes rather useless. I'd presume I only need to open a component once I'm actually going to operate on items of that type -- and not to know if its stage has changed. I also tried if the KMail shortcut for checking new mail, CTRL+L worked, offering a work-a-around, but the summary view did not recognise it. So KMail still needs to be opened in order to checking for new mail.
See also bug 79002, which is IMHO the better solution for this.
