Description Aleksey Nogin 2007-01-10 18:53:51 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: RedHat RPMs
OS: Linux

I have the task bar set up with "Show windows from all desktops" and "Sort windows by desktop" enabled, and most of my desktops have two windows open most of the time. So, naming the windows from desktop "A", "A1" and "A2", and so on, normally my taskbar looks like

A1 B1 C1 D1 ...
A2 B2 C2 D2 ...

which is all nice and good. However if for some reason there is, for example, a third window on desktop "A", then I get

A1 A3 B2 C2 D2 ...
A2 B1 C1 D1 ...

and windows from the same desktop no longer "line up", making it much harder to find the right window.

I would like to ask for the "Sort window by desktop" mode to allow prohibiting the windows from different desktops from being placed in the same column in the taskbar. In other words, I would like the second example to look like

A1 A3 B1 C1 D1 ...
A2 B2 C2 D2 ...

It might also be a good idea to allow some sort of a "gap" or other separator between desktops, but this is not as important.

P.S. Related entries:
 - Bug 32675 claims that the "gap" was there in KDE 1 and asks for it to be brought back in KDE 2. Closed to years ago with "This bug is really ancient, and we're -positive- it's a dupe, somewhere.". I was not able to find the alleged dup.
 - Bug 98867 asks for the windows from different desktops to be color-coded in task bar.

Kicker is no more mantained and all bugs/wishes will not be fixed/implemented in KDE3. A list of the most interesting/unresolved issues which is still valid for KDE4 has been created. Before reopening old kicker bugs on KDE4 Plasma, please try the new KDE 4.3.1, check the current behaviour and, only if you find new bugs or if you need a particular feature, open a new bug report.

Remember that KDE 4 is a full rewrite of KDE 3 so some old features will not be re-implemented because the behaviour has be changed a lot on some sides.

Thanks for the comprehension and enjoy the new KDE 4!
