Description adham hashibon 2005-02-08 18:28:19 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

When taskbar is set to display all the windows from all desktops, and even though they are sorted according to the desktop, it is not possible to infer to which desktop each window is unless clicking on it, which is not convinient, sometimes I loose my self and dont know in which desktops each bunch of applications is. I know that the window list button shows this, as well as alt+tab, but hey why do we need a taskbar then!

I propose that each icon in the taskbar will have a little no stating the desktop, or even better, collor icons in deskrtop one with a shade of yellow, then desktop 2 without a shade, then again desktop 3 icons with a shade of yellow, or some other color, i.e. to get a staggering colors for the desktops, another option of course is to color the icons of each desktop differently.

This is by far the only annoying kde lack of feature Im having!

Thanks.

i don't think colours or additional icons are a great idea since the point of the taskbar is to show windows rather than desktops, really. it has been requested that a little gap appear between groups of buttons to show some visible grouping according to desktop, as it was waaaay back in kde 1. would this work for you as well?

The most important thing is to be able to know if adjacent icons belong to the same desktop, for example, whether two 'konsols' which have adjacent icons in the taskbar belong to the same desktop or not, so the user would not click on the icon and be taken away to a different desktop automatically/. Some sort of a visual, and fast way to do it will do. An increased tabbing would be nice, although I do not remembet the days of kde 1 so good (even though I used kde since 0.something i.e the alpha days!...), so I dont know how good the gap will be. Is it hard to impliment a different coloring for the task bar? or alternatively add the desktop name in the tooltips!!!! whats the fastest easy way to do it?

Also it would be neat to gray-out, on-all-desktop windows (in addition to palcing them in the begin of applications lists)

I reckon if you fade windows odd-numbered desktops to one colour (light grey?) and even-numbered ones to a different colour (dark grey?) then you would get a contrast between the desktops. The "on all desktops" windows could be as if they were on desktop 0.

I personally go for the large desktop pager (one row of 4 desktops, and the taskbar set to "large" (3 rows of windows)) and I don't show windows from other desktops, so I bypass the problem entirely. This way, I remember where things are on virtual desktops by location rather than desktop numbers and reading of the taskbar.

hi,

I tried this, bit I do not have much realestate for a large taskbar!!
I miss the window icons from CDE/motif a lot!

Related wish - bug 139868 that asks for the windows from different desktops in "Sort by desktop" mode not to be placed in one column (for taskbars that have 2 rows or more), and optionally have some "gap" between the windows from different desktops.

Kicker is no more mantained and all bugs/wishes will not be fixed/implemented in KDE3. A list of the most interesting/unresolved issues which is still valid for KDE4 has been created. Before reopening old kicker bugs on KDE4 Plasma, please try the new KDE 4.3.1, check the current behaviour and, only if you find new bugs or if you need a particular feature, open a new bug report.

Remember that KDE 4 is a full rewrite of KDE 3 so some old features will not be re-implemented because the behaviour has be changed a lot on some sides.

Thanks for the comprehension and enjoy the new KDE 4!
