Version: 1.4_beta1 (using KDE KDE 3.5.1) Installed from: Gentoo Packages OS: Linux I am very happy to see the "organize files" functions in amarok 1.4beta1. However, today I realized that dealing with German artists that have the article "Die" (like English "The") in their name is a little bit tricky. For bands with English names on can mark a checkbox to ignore "The" in artist names. Please add the German "Die" (and possible more articles from other languages?) to the list of "ignore articles". I guess there is no need to offer a seperate checkbox for every article - either on wants to sort the collection without regarding the article or not. Thanks in advance from Germany - you guys rock!
Suggestion to the amaroK developers (if you haven't done so already): use the i18n() function to get the information from the translators: i18n("Translators: list the articles or similar words that should be ignored when sorting a list; Example: \"The\" (The Beatles -> Beatles, The)", ""); So the "de" translators would translate that to "Der,Die,Das". Of course, this will only ignore the English and your local language article. Asking for more than that is too much, IMHO.
The same for the french version with Le / La / Les

A first step would be to ignore just the English "The" and the equivalent for the localization in which KDE runs (e.g. German in my case). As a side note I can not imagine a German band name where the "localized THE" doens't refer to the plurial translation of "THE". Does anybody know a band that has the singular masculin/femine form? If not that would shorten our list quite a lot. Another way to archive our goal would be the possibility to let the user define a list by him-/herself in a configure dialogue. I would prefer this way cause it is very flexible, e.g. a German addicted to Spanish ska music could just add the Spanish articles into the "ignore list" the first time they appear in the collection. This would solve the speed problem for most users cause one hardly has such an international collection that this list would get too long. I think it is important to keep the ignore function for the English "The" cause this usally can be found in any collection.

Although it would be slow, the customized list would be good. If not, English and the local language. And of course the checkbox to disable all that. PD: In Spain, almost all the groups start with a singular article. Examples: The Verve, The Police, La guardia, El último de la fila, etc.
Please, do not do it only by i18n! My musical taste and artist collection does not completely depend on my mother tongue. And I hear more than only German and English bands: Spanish stuff, Balkan beats e.g.. Still want them nicely sorted. I am very much in favour of a user definable list with a sensible default, which indeed could depend on the locale. Regarding comment #4, an example is "Der Braunschweiger Spiritualchor" or "Das Wiener Boheme Quartett". No, I don't have them in my collection ;-) Don't be scared by user-definability! BTW does Linus listen to music on the computer? ;-)

Sorry, we've discussed this internally at length, and there are no plans to implement this. It's getting too complex for our taste.
Ok, could you then please remove this English-only feature too, please? It's already a pretty complex special feature. Disappointed.
