Description Janet 2005-09-23 16:07:47 UTC
Version: 3.4.2 (using KDE 3.4.2, Debian Package 4:3.4.2-4 (testing/unstable))
Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.13-kanotix-5

After I upgraded to KDE 3.4.2 the file icons in konqueror filemanager aren't aligned properly anymore when some icons have a text of more than one row. I tried changing the width of the icon text but it doesn't matter if it is 600 or 1 pixel. Only when I set the hight of the icons' text to 1 row (I usually have 4 rows) the icons are aligned correctly. I made a screenshot and uploaded it to ImageShack: http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/6250/konqsortierdarstellungsfehler3.jpg
Comment 1 Janet 2005-10-16 16:32:54 UTC
Well, it seems to happen when the text of the icon/link is wider than the icon itself. All my directories look garbled :( A solution would be to use shorter names or to divide the text - but that's only a crippled solution. In KDE 3.4.1 and before it worked fine.

You may have noticed it. This bug is still alive in KDE 3.5.

> You may have noticed it. This bug is still alive in KDE 3.5.

Is it? In KDE 3.4.3-2 (Debian Sid) which I use at the moment, it is gone.
Comment 6 Janet 2006-03-07 22:59:09 UTC
And in KDE 3.5.1 it too isn't there anymore.
Comment 7 Daniel Faust 2006-03-07 23:05:56 UTC
I'm using KDE 3.5.1 on suse 9.3 but it's still there.
Comment 8 Janet 2006-03-11 16:20:02 UTC
Ok, I am re-opening the bug report. But I wonder what is different in the SuSE 9.3 and Debian Sid KDE 3.5.1 that causes the behaviour. Do you still have the problem, when you rename the user's .kde directory and re-login or when you add a new user?
Comment 9 Daniel Faust 2006-03-11 16:45:57 UTC
I created a new user and the bug still exists. The only way to avoid this problem, is to set the "height for icon text" to "1". - And yes, this problem is a bit confusing, since this is a very ugly bug, and I have this bug on all suse 9.3 and 10.0 machines, I set up. - So it might be a suse bug.
Comment 10 Marcus Woletz 2006-03-11 18:32:33 UTC
Another thing is that on my SuSE 10.0 installation setting the
text width has really no effect on how the icons are displayed.
I think this is another effect from the same error.
We should as soon as possible fix this annoying bug,
because such errors are ugly for the eye and awkward when showing
a win user the linux desktop.

The question is if this bug relies on a undefined behaviour of the
graphics system or some subtle error in the configuration files
of kde.

I confirm this bug for KDE 3.5.5.

To Comment #10: The Text width only affects the display in Multi Column View Mode (see the "What's this" help text on that spinbox).
BTW: I can not reproduce the described bug with current 3.5.5 svn snapshot
(My settings: Arial-9, 8 lines for icon text)
Comment 14 Marcus Woletz 2007-01-07 12:15:51 UTC
Hello Martin,

do you have checked it with various icon sizes? In some cases the effect shows only with certain sizes. I've just created a test dir with some long names and some short names (I think that the problem arises with longer names; must investigate under which circumstances the error occurs ;-)
In my test dir everything is displayed OK until I switch the icon size. In other dirs the effect shows at other icon sizes.

hi, does this bug still exists in 3.5.7? i can't reproduce it :(
could anyone of you provide a step-by-step testcase? thanks, dextarr

Comment 17 Daniel Faust 2007-11-27 10:03:38 UTC
so hopefully this bug will be obsolete by dolphin but on suse 10.3 with kde 3.5.7 the bug still exists. i set the font to DejaVu Sans Mono and now the problem doesn't exist any more.
i don't know how to reproduce it, just install a suse os (in german) and you will see the bug.

Reports about file management mode reported against KDE 3 (konqueror) has been closed: konqueror in KDE 3 is no more developed and mantained. All bugs and wishes which could be interesting for Dolphin in KDE 4 (the new KDE file manager) has been collected into a specific list.

Please try the new file manager before request new features and report bugs.

Before submitting new reports check carefully the already opened Dolphin reports in order to don't add duplicates.

Many thanks.
