Description Victor Declerk 2005-06-14 00:24:34 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs
OS: Linux

In Konqueror, when I copy a file and paste it using Ctrl+V with a dir selected the files goes to the parent dir of the selected one.
The expected behaviour: The files are copied to the selected dir.
Regards.
Victor.

With selected directory you mean in the file tree or in the normal file view?

When you mean the file view, then I disagree. The file should be copied into the current open directory independent of my current selection. IMHO this is the least surprising behaviour.

I mean in the file tree.

I can confirm that when pasting with Ctrl-V in konqueror in tree view, the file is pasted in the folder as shown in the location bar and not the currently selected folder. I will consult before closing or confirming.

shares similarities with #107522

Testcase:

* Create the directory structure /tmp/foo/bar/baz and the text file /tmp/test
* Go to /tmp, select test and copy (Ctrl+C)
* Go to /tmp/foo and switch to tree view
* Expand bar, so baz is visible
* Select baz (without opening it)
* Do Ctrl+V, or select Paste Clipboard Contents on the Edit menu

Now a copy of /tmp/test appears at /tmp/foo/test.

Victor: am I correct in thinking you would expect the copy to appear at /tmp/foo/bar/baz/test?

If so, I would call this expected behaviour - the file is pasted into the current folder. The way to achieve what you want would be to right-click the folder you want to paste into and select Paste.

In reply to comment #5:
I for one would expect that the file goes into the highlighted, i.e. active, directory, not the one that happens to be the root of the current view.
Comment 8 Thomas Friedrichsmeier 2007-12-28 00:48:19 UTC
I think the current behavior is intended and reasonable.

If it was to be changed along the lines described, for consistency, also:
- pasting files would need to overwrite the selected file regardless of filename
- pasting files would not be possible at all, when more than one file/folder is selected (as it would not be clear, which file/folder the paste action would apply to)

Changing this would additionally introduce the usability problem that the selected (and then active!) folder would not necessarily be visible at all without scrolling.

So unless this gets more reasoning / more votes, soon, I suggest closing it as WONTFIX.

I agree with Thomas.

Moreover on the new KDE4 this type of view doesn't exist anymore.
