Version: 3.4 (using KDE KDE 3.4.0) Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages When I try to browse a samba share with the latest samba 3.0.14a installed wich contains a non endlish filenames, I can see only a english-named files, and non-english files are shown as squares and so on... When I rollback to samba 3.0.11, then all ok again. KDE 3.4 Debian SID/Unstable.
I have the same problem. Samba (3.0.14a-2) is on my fw-machine (Debian sarge/testing) and I'm trying to browse from my desktop computer (Ubuntu 5.04 with latest packages, konqueror 3.4.0-0ubuntu18). If I change through Konqueror the squares in non-english names to the right characters, they don't show right in the server when viewed. It seems that though I've told konqueror to use ISO-8859-15 it's still using UTF-8, but it doesn't help if I change the charset in samba config to UTF-8.
I resolved this problem by setting a utf8 encoding in "control-center -> browsing windows lan"... But(!), on samba 3.0.11 it was working with utf8. Samba server did not changed...
* was working with koi8-r

Same problem here. Filenames on Samba and Windows shares are broken in konqueror and File-Open dialogs. smbclient doesn't have this problem. Local filenames doesn't have this problem. Say, create file 'тест.txt' (Cyrillic name, seen through local filesystem or through smbclient // localhost/share, hex 'D4 C5 D3 D4 2E 74 78 74' in KOI8- R and 'D1 82 D0 B5 D1 81 D1 82 2E 74 78 74' in UTF-8). Opened in konqueror smb://localhost/share, I see [8 squares].txt Making RightClick->Copy->paste to editor, I get smb:// localhost/share/????????.txt Making Drag&Drop-copy in konqueror, I get the file, but with name ????????.txt (Hex 3F 3F 3F 3F 3F 3F 3F 3F 2E 74 78 74) RHEL4 kde 3.5.0 and samba 3.0.14a from http://kde-redhat.sourceforge.net/ qt-3.3.5-11.0.el4.kde kdelibs-3.5.0-4.0.el4.kde kdebase-3.5.0-1.2.el4.kde kdenetwork-3.5.0-1.0.el4.kde kde-i18n-Russian-3.5.0-1.0.kde samba-3.0.14a-2.1.el4.kde samba-client-3.0.14a-2.1.el4.kde samba-common-3.0.14a-2.1.el4.kde LANG=ru_RU.koi8r in /etc/samba/smb.conf: unix charset = KOI8-R dos charset = CP866 Tried to change setting in [Conrol center- Local Network browsing - Windows charset], it doesn't affect behaviour.
Works fine here. Tested on Samba 3.0.21a. Make sure that your "unix charset" parameter in smb.conf is correct.
I've just compiled samba from http://us3.samba.org/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/Fedora/SRPMS/samba-3.0.21a-1.src.rpm and bug seems to disappear. Sorry for disturbance.
Looks more like a samba/libsmbclient bug to me, closing. Feel free to reopen if you have contrary evidence/opinion.
Also make sure that you have no ~/.smb installed
