Description Marc Wathelet 2005-02-08 20:00:28 UTC
Version: 1.7.1 (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc 3.3.4
OS: Linux

Kile do not respond to mouse and keyboard requests

I've got more than 10 files opened at the same time and auto save option is on. No special action is performed, just normal typing or copying text. Sorry, it happens from time to time, and I don't know how to reproduce it.

Refresh events are still correctly handled and the cursor is still blicking. If modifications are not saved, just wait for the next auto save before killing kile.
It is exactly the same behaviour when a dialog box is active, but in this case no dialog box can be seen, is it a warning from the auto save procedure that is not correctly displayed?

The menubar is also freezed. I've read another bug report from last year about this where kate was incrimined. My system has been updated on last december.
If necessary, I can compile kile with -g option in gcc, and always running it with gdb to stop execution and let's you investigate.

If you have this problem, try turning off autosave...

I noticed that when I turn off the autosave option, kile is not showing this behavior anymore. I have been using kile without this prob for three days now. If the problem resurfaces, I will post here. But I have the feeling that autosave leads to the source of it.

I have the exact same symptoms: lots of open files and autosave enabled. Also the discriptions from the duplicate bug are correct. Disabling autosave seems to resolve the problem. Also the autosave frequency seems to make a difference, although I have not been able to exactly pinpoint the time of failure in terms of the number of autosaves. With autosave=30min I have sometimes worked for days before it happens, but then again you have to wait for half an hour before killing kile. I have voted for this bug because it essentially makes the autosave function useless. The version of Kile used was 1.8.1 using KDE 3.4.2 from current debian unstable as of the time of this writing.

This problem still occurs with KDE 3.4.3 (SuSE 9.3 with updated KDE) and kile 1.8.1 compiled from source. It also does not require "lots" of files, I regularly experience this complete freeze with 2 open files.

I'm having the same problem.
It seems that the GUI freezes while kile does an autosave of the document i'm typing in. I find the active document correctly saved at the time the GUI freezed.
AND I find the .backup file saved at the same time. The content of both files is identical.

The other documents remain unsaved until the next autosave is scheduled (10 Minutes later for me).

When I log out of KDE before all documents in Kile are autosaved. I can choose wether i want to save these documents or not.

Hope this helps... It's not a good feeling having an editor that freezes from time to time while writing ur thesis =)

Cheers,
Christopher

PS:Already postet this on BUG92368. Duplicate?

I have the same problem. Kubuntu Dapper, Kile 1.8.1, KDE 3.5.2. The symptoms are exactly as described, I have a number of files open and everything freezes and the cursor still blinks. I've taken to simply hitting Ctrl-S after every few paragraphs.

I have not been able to find any way to reproduce this reliably. Perhaps it only affects people who are working on a thesis? :)

Bug 92368 reports that a fix is in version 1.9.

Happening here too, same problems. Autosave on, and with just 2 files, freezes completely. Debian etch, Gnome 2.14.3, kile 1.9.2 (working kde version 3.5.5). Hope it is not thesis-driven... writing mine on kile too! ;-)

Hello,

at the last submitter:
Are you sure it is autosave related?
Can you/someone somehow reproduce it with version 1.9.x?

Thanks

Hello,

we got a report http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=406470 that sounds like this bug although in s slightly different manner.

The bug was in connection with the lyx pipe (config option "Let Kile process Lyx commands send by ...") on a remote filesystem (openafs).

Anyone experienced problems while inserting citations etc. through the lyx pipe?
It maybe some kind of deadlock or so.

As long as we don't have a way to reproduce it, it is really difficult to find the culprit.

Thanks so far
Thomas Braun

I think that this bug has been fixed for Kile 2.1 (beta 4) and KDE 4 as there have been lots of changes in Kile's internals as well as in kdelibs.

However, if you still encounter this problem with Kile 2.1 or newer, please feel free to re-open this bug.
