Description Stuart Young 2005-02-01 13:35:01 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

Now I know Kmail will use the Socks support built into KDE, however I'd like to be able to either enable or disable this within Kmail per Sending and/or Receiving Account in the Network options. Even just the option of disabling Socks support for a particular email account would be useful.

eg: One particular host that I want to connect to, I need to use a Socks proxy to connect to to send/receive mail (using ssh -D in particular), but not for normal operations, or for any other send/receive mail accounts configured in Kmail.

Currently, it's everything (including other KDE apps) uses Socks, or nothing. And while I can configure something like this through dante's config, it's a bit of a pain, and can cause problems if things change (like destination hosts, the network you're connected to, etc).

One reason for using ssh -D is that some ISPs don't allow you to send or receive email from their servers except from within their network, but allow you to ssh into a machine at home from outside their network. Pushing all the traffic via another network connection is not only slow, but means more data usage for that net connection than necessary.

This is very useful for us "road warriors", who use ssh when away from home with a laptop. Currently I set up seperate ssh tunnels for send and receive. If I could tell it just to use the Socks proxy just for that connection, it'd be a lot nicer.

I'll try to get the framework for that for KDE 4. Not before.

I'd really love this functionnality, too.

The possibility to configure a specific account (incoming and/or outgoing) with socks, without impacting every other KDE application, would make me very happy.

I currently have to use two mail clients to be able to do this (Kontact with direct access, and Thunderbird with sock proxy). I'd love to be able to switch everything to Kontact.

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
