Description Hasso Tepper 2005-01-31 13:09:27 UTC
Version: 1.7.92 (using KDE 3.3.91 (beta1), compiled sources)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-6)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.10-rc2-bk8

I switched to estonian dictionary in mail editor, but it has no effect for "on the fly" spellchecking - english dictionary is still used. "Tools -> Spellcheck..." uses correctly estonian dictionary.

I found out finally what's the point - confusion between new and old settings. "Settings -> Spellchecker..." settings will affect only spellcheck user executes from menu "Tools -> Spellcheck...". Language of the on the fly spellcheck can be changed only per identity - ie. from identity settings or switch on "View -> Dictionary" in composer and change it from appeared combobox. Very confusing ...

Hi Hasso,

Oh, that dictionary dropdown in the composer is nice. I hadn't noticed
that before.

I think I understand your complaint, but I don't really have any ideas
for how to improve the situation (it's kind of difficult for me to
see things from your perspective as I only read English fluently).

But, if you have a good idea about how to improve things please share
your idea with us.

Don.

BTW Thanks for the tip in Bug#100247

Idea is to make difference between spellcheck methods clear. It's not easy though. One idea is to remove "Spellchecker..." from settings menu and put button for that into spellcheck dialog (the one you get from tools menu). This removes the source of biggest confusion. Making it clear where on-the-fly spellcheck dictionary can be chosen, is trickier and I haven't good ideas.

One tiny idea is to make "Dictionary:" dropdown be on by default (on-th-fly spellcheck is on by default) and making it appear automatically if user chooses switches on-the-fly spellcheck on. But I'm not sure if it's really good idea. There are two issues I see:

1) Switching dropdowns off/on might make composer layout ugly, because the new recipient editor's layout doesn't follow the layout the rest of composer.
2) It's easy to introduce unexpected confusion with automatic appearance - like html toolbar issue (I think that it's worth of another usability bugreport). User has HTML formatting disabled and he wants to make it default. He knows that there is HTML toolbar, makes it visible (Settings -> Toolbars -> HTML toolbar) and closes composer. He opens it again and there isn't HTML toolbar. Note, that this works in every other application and for main toolbar in composer as well. Problem is that appearance of HTML toolbar follows another setting actually (Options -> Formatting (HTML)).
