Description fernan 2005-01-27 21:01:25 UTC
Version:            (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from:    FreeBSD Ports
OS:                FreeBSD

I don't have cups installed on my system.

I've built both qt and kdelibs3 with the --disable-cups option (for configure).

When I go to Main Menu->Settings->Printing Manager I see the two printers that I have in my /etc/printcap together with some pseudo printers provided by KDE. This is fine.

The 'Print system currently used' is Generic UNIX LPD Print System
(default)'. In this popup menu there are two additional options (LPR/LPRng, and RPLR). Again this is fine.

To test printing I select one of the two printers, and then clicked on the button with the printer icon to print a test page. A dialog appears telling me that a test page will be printed. I click OK. The test page gets printed ... but to my surprise the test page says 'Printed using CUPS v1.1.x' together with the CUPS logo and references to "Easy Software products, Hollywood, Maryland".

I believe that the test page was not printed using CUPS. If I'm right, then the problem is that we're using the same test page for all purposes.

If this is so, then my wish/feature change/request is:
please provide an agnostic (with respect to the printing system) test page. Otherwise users who are not using CUPS may get confused.
Perhaps this is a good opportunity to develop a test page with the KDE logo? Apsfilter has its own test page. CUPS seems to have its own too.
My Apple LaserWriter also has it own test page. Linux distros have their own print test pages. Why not KDE?

# to my surprise the test page says 'Printed using CUPS v1.1.x'

hehehe... Yes, this is still "hard-coded".

Are you aware that you can change the file used for "testpages"? Go to

Sorry, this is not yet an automatic thing....

# please provide an agnostic (with respect to the printing system) test page.

In fact I once had started to draft such a testpage, but then got distracted. I may still do so in the near future. Depending on the selected print subsystem (or/and the "./configure" option during build time), the page should change to tell the user which print system was actually used. (We can still use the CUPS testpage as a starting point, and add modifications. Because the PostScript code in there has some nice features....)

# Perhaps this is a good opportunity to develop a test page with the KDE logo?
# Apsfilter has its own test page. CUPS seems to have its own too.

If you have any knowledge about this, your submission is welcome. Dont hold your breath about me doing it short-term.

Missing paragraph in comment #1 added here:

"
Are you aware that you can change the file used for "testpages"?

* Start "kprinter"
* "Expand" the dialog (button lower left corner)
* Click "System Options"
* Highlight "General" (top icon left column)
* Checkmark "Specify personal test page" and select the one you like.
