Description rgpublic 2005-01-18 23:53:46 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

For a long time I've been using various MP3 players and still
dreaming of the following possibility (sorry if this explanation
is a bit longish):
Imagine 3 people are sitting in an office. They all have MP3s on their
respective hard-disks. One computer is running amarok and
playing music shuffled from all 3 people. So far this is no problem
with amarok: Just use SMB or NFS and mount all folders from the
2 other people and put all 3 folders as watched folders in amarok.
The problem now is: Amarok has no notion which folders are local
(r/w) and which are foreign (read-only). And there seems to be no easy
way to hide some folders and make them reappear without rescanning
the whole collection. This is useful if someone is not at the office
and you dont want to hear his songs. And sometimes if I'm alone
late in the evening I only want to hear my own songs. And when I
edit meta tags and look for weird filenames or fetch new album covers
I only want to see my own files. All these things could be realized
at once by simply being able to switch on/off whole folder trees
without rescanning the whole collection. Perhaps just a menu option
"Disable folders temporarily..." and then a list with checkboxes
for every folder. Really great would be the ability to save a
certain combination of folders under a name and then you could select just with a drop down:
"Only my songs" (/home/user/music)
"My songs and Pete's" (/home/user/music,/mnt/pete/music)
"Only Mike's" (/mnt/mike/music)
"Whole office" (/home/user/music, /mnt/pete/music, /mnt/mike/music)
This might also be realized by extending the "intelligent playlist" functionality to compare the folder with a given string but to hide
songs of other users completely would be the way clearer solution
IMHO.
I'm quite sure there are
many other useful things you could do with sth. like this.
Hope I could get the idea across.
Basically it means being able to "use" other peoples music on demand
but without getting that music in the way when you don't want to /
or are organizing your files.
Thanks for making amaroK already the best player out there even without
this ;-)

I have multiple collections on my computer (all in ~/), one of which is exclusively comedy tracks. I don't want to hear comedy all the time, but its nice to have in amarok so I can search it. I would like to be able to turn off the files in the comedy folder when I just want music.

You could make a) one ginormous playlist with you files. Of course this has the drawback of not being dynamic. You could also
b) Use the file browser. The file browser has bookmarks. Bookmarks sound like exactly what you need without the fancy sorting of the collection browser.
