Description Fridtjof Busse 2004-12-31 18:02:47 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
OS: Linux

Even if I tel KMail to not store the mails encrypted, they are stored encrypted (don't know the english name, but it should be something like "Store sent mails encrypted"). Happens both with OpenPGP/MIME as well as with Inline.
Do I misunderstand the meaning of this option? I'd like the sent mails with encryption to be stored unencrypted locally.
Or is the only way to read the mails afterwards to encrypt them yith my key as well?

Yes, the option is about storing mails encrypted, even those that were sent unencrypted.

There is a hidden option for that.
After quitting kmail (for good, even the system tray icon if you use it),
edit ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc and in the group [Reader], add
store-displayed-messages-unencrypted=true
Save, then start kmail.
Upon reading an encrypted mail, it will ask (each time) whether to save it unencrypted.
The feature is there in 3.3.2, but might be a bit buggy - you might have to switch to
another folder and back for the message list to be refreshed correctly.
That's fixed in proko2 and HEAD. If you see any other problem, please tell.

If there's enough interest, I think we could add a GUI for this feature...

OK, thanks for the clarification and the hint about store-displayer-messages-unencrypted.
I'd definitly like to see a GUI-option for that, otherwise noone will know there's such an option.

Does it work for you?

Comment 4 Fridtjof Busse 2005-01-08 16:57:36 UTC
Right now, it doesn't. KDE 3.3.2, set store-..., but KMail doesn't ask me anything, except the passphrase.
But I'm using gpgme/gnupg-1.9.10, since I need compatibility with OpenPGP (although the setup for that is really ugly and I wish KMail would support OpenPGP out-of-the-box).

I was looking for this feature as well as I thought the current behaviour is a bug (after all, I am _sending_ messages encrypted, but noone else has access to my machine).
The hint from comment #1 doesn't work (KDE 3.3.91, gpg-agent 1.9.10, gpg 1.2.4). I am using OpenPGP/MIME.
Once this feature works, a GUI item would be very helpful as I find the default behaviour strange.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure whether your explanation is quite right.

There is an option in the Security-dialog which is called 'Store sent mails encrypted' (something like is, using localized German version). The corresponding tooltip explains that this decides whether mails, that were sent encrypted, are also to be stored encrypted. The tooltip further discourages this, as those mails could later perhaps not be viewed anymore, e.g. when certificates expire.

So perhaps the original poster had it right? (I have this problem, unchecking this dialog box nevertheless results in mails being saved encrypted).
Or the tooltip (perhaps only the German translation) is wrong?

Using KDE 3.4.2 on Gentoo Linux ~x86 here.

With 4.3.1 the sent mail is still stored encrypted, even though the configuration option was set to not store it encrypted.

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
