Description Nick Steeves 2004-12-17 20:28:17 UTC
Version: 1.7.2 (using KDE KDE 3.3.2)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: GCC-3.3.4
OS: Linux

As a longtime fan of KDE's policy of single-clicking being default, I feel that Kmail can also benefit from the efficiency that single-clicking provides. I am writing this from the perspective of a user who has disabled the preview pane, though resolution #2 might apply to those users who haven't disabled the preview pane.

I have read that others feel concerned that single-click to open would make it difficult to move messages from the (message list pane?) to the folder pane. Personally, I find this hard to believe. Perhaps those users did not enjoy single-clicking *any* icons... They did not say.

It seems that there are two possible resolutions:

1.Inherit the user's choice of single vs double click from wherever kcontrol's Peripherals->Mouse section points to. This means that users who abhore single-click to open, would never experience it. If I were user who loved single-click, and wasn't posting this report, I would be pleasantly surprised to find that kmail echoed my chosen configuration preference.

2. Use middle click to "Open in new window" as per Konqueror's default. This would make kmail's feel more consistent with konqueror's, no?

I'd go with #2. Not only does Konq open a new tab/window from middle-click but so does Mozilla Thunderbird. I'd don't have a problem with single-click either since the message would only be opened once the button is *released*, so an override would occur once the pointer is in the folder list (plus the use of 'Ctrl' and 'Shift' as well).

Another efficiency improvement is to (optionally) add previous, and shortcut keys to the message view toolbar. Honestly, I'm surprised that it isn't configurable--everything else seems to be. I've been forced to go back to single-window Kmail, because it is too labour-intensive to close window, double-click next message, ctrl-w, double... The reason I'm a fan of disabling the preview pane, is because I often have 50+ messages in my Inbox. (functionally, I think Mutt is the epitome of MUAs, and I hope Kmail can be the GUI equivalent, plus all the nice things a GUI provides)

That's bug 71963.

Oops, scratch that then; I don't want this bug/wish to get closed just because of a hasty statement. (thought I'm going to vote for 71963) Thanks. :-)

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
