Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.3) Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages There is irritating mismatch between kmail and korganizer behaviour on window close: - in kmail closing the window completely shuts down the application, including new mail monitor in panel doc - kopete, korganizer, kget (and more) shuts their main window but leave the application running and dock indicator present Since I started using kopete and korganizer, I frequently accidentally close the kmail when I only want to get off its window - but simultaneously want to keep the new mail monitor running. So I would recommend KDE to establish some standard relating this behaviour and implement it consistently. Personally I would probably prefer kopete/korganizer/kget/... behaviour (window close leave app running, one need to File/Exit or icon/Exit to shut it down). There is really no user-level difference between closing kopete window (and keeping new messages monitor on) and closing kmail window (and keeping new mail monitor on).
Ops, I mis-clicked product, it should be kmail. Unfortunately I have no rights to change it.

Tray applications minimize on close, non-tray applications close on close. File->Quit closes no matter what. What is inconsistent here?
If I click [x] button in the kmail main window corner, kmail shuts down completely. Maybe KDE version matters (I use 3.2.3 which is available in debian sarge) - and it was changed later? This is of course inconsistent with the tray-applications behaviour - kmail IS the tray application.
Sounds like you have a buggy kmail. Kmail has since KDE 3.2, only minimized when closed as a window _if_ you have the tray icon activated.
This issue can not be reproduced in KDE4. Closing.
