Description Ian Morris 2004-11-23 21:22:24 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.2.1)
OS: Linux

The file manager sort order is incorrect a '^' symbol in the column header denotes names (values) with a lower value should be before values with higher value...

'a' before 'b'

a down arrow 'v' implies higher values should be displayed before lower values.

Konqueror does it the other way round which is illogical from both a useability perspective (Windows/Mac) and a Mathematical perspective.

I wish it would be that easy. It's this way in all Qt lists (and all GTK ones I tried). It needs to be changed for all of them. I mail qt-bugs

Comment 3 Germain Garand 2004-11-24 16:08:31 UTC
Actually, if it's that way in Windows/Mac, then I'd say *they* have a major usability bug. The arrow is not intending to denote a "superior/inferior" relationship but a "from..to" relationship.
"from A to Z/from 0 to 9" is the only existing, agreed upon relationship between roman/arab alphanumeric symbols worldwide.

It might node bode well with the full unicode range, but it's the only relation that is somewhat intuitive from a human or humanist perspective - the rest is plain arbitrary anyway, even from a mathematical point of view.

don't use reply if you have a broken mailer
Comment 6 Olivier Goffart 2009-04-15 10:13:58 UTC
This is handled by the style, and consistent with non-Qt application on the same platform
