Description Ferdinand Gassauer 2004-11-17 08:35:14 UTC
Version: 1.7.1 (using KDE 3.2.3, compiled sources)
Compiler: gcc version 3.2.2
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.19-64GB-SMP

Hi!
I frequently do not realize, that a message has attachments
why?
using IMAP, the mail header does not show the attachment icon prior to clicking

On click the message is shown and the focus of attention moves immediately to the message window.
there the message is shown and ends with the signature and very often with some lengthy disclaimer text.

Only after this text (which nobody reads if it comes from a known business partner) the attachments are show.

I never get there until I print the message.

So I suggest to show the attachment icon aditionally at a very visible place in the mail header.

Even beeing aware of this problem, in the hurry of reading (KMAIL 1.8) , I continue to miss the attachments.
IMHO an icon for attachments should be well visible placed in or near the header of the message (as thunderbird and outlook do)

Me, in kmail 1.8.2 (kde 3.4.2), I can't see the attached document icon until I double click on message title and external window is opened. Really misleading as I've asked several times for the attachment without realizing it was "my" fault.

Thanks for your work,

Pau

I put the severity to "normal" because IMHO a wrong (=missing atttachment icon) information is displayed.
Comment 5 Carsten Burghardt 2006-01-04 11:25:54 UTC
I'm sorry but this is no bug. The attachment icon is calculated immediately for pop and dimap but it can only be calculated for imap when you click on the message. There is no way around as you have to download the message to be sure if the message has an attachment and this can only be done when you request the message the first time.
Comment 6 Ferdinand Gassauer 2006-01-04 13:00:47 UTC
Any way to communicate this to the user ?

may be a question mark (or something else) could give a hit, that kmail just does not know it until clicking the message - and this can only happen for dimap accounts.

IMHO more and more people will run imap at the office and dimap at home - and kmail should look different.

dimap accounts should show the icon without clicking as the mail is
already completely downloaded and stored. Doesn't this work?

By showing question marks? If you add this then it takes about half a day
before you get feature requests to turn that "annoying behaviour" off :-(
It's not a bad idea IMO but features are only implemented in HEAD so this
won't change in 3.5.

for imap !!

I have some mails with attachments (MS-word or pdf docs icon in the body) but
without icon in the header bloc.

It looks like that all mails after switching to
KMail 1.9.1. suse 10.0 KDE 3.5.0 (rpm)
have no attachment icon
the attachments should load atomatically (settings)

PS currently I do not use dimap - have to try later

This has been implemented in the enterprise branch, but is not yet ported to other branches.
Comment 11 Jonathan Marten 2009-02-24 15:31:47 UTC
Both KDE4 and 3.5 now have "Enterprise Headers" showing the attachment icons,
KDE4 additionaly has "Fancy Headers" showing them too. Can this wish be closed?

No, this bug is something different. Here, the attachment icon in the message list is not shown until you click on the message.
Comment 13 Jonathan Marten 2009-02-24 17:17:53 UTC
OK, now clear. The original report confused me by referring to the "mail header", "message window", needing to scroll to the end to see attachments.
Is this subject a better description?
Comment 14 Ferdinand Gassauer 2009-02-25 07:52:08 UTC
there are 2 bugs
1) imap (do not know for pop) - not solved
the icon for attachment is only checked and displayed AFTER the line in the message list (header) gets focus.
IMHO still a valid feature request to do this check immediately when reading the imap folder.
it would be appropriate to include this check in the "Refresh folder" to overcome the problem of old imap mails, which for some reasons have no attachment icon.

2) attachment name in the header - solved
attachment names are displayed in the header section
together with (1) it was necessary to scroll to the end of the message to see if there is an attachment

hope that helps to clarify

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Still not fixed in KDE SC 4.8.
Comment 17 Denis Kurz 2016-09-24 18:03:26 UTC
This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kmail2 (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.12 or later), it gets closed in about three months.
Comment 18 Denis Kurz 2017-01-07 22:28:46 UTC
Just as announced in my last comment, I close this bug. If you encounter it again in a recent version (at least 5.0 aka 15.08), please open a new one unless it already exists. Thank you for all your input.
